Started bass a year after, continued for a good 4 years with pipes as my main instrument. Slowly bass became more prominent, and now I don't play pipes anymore. Kinda miss it. Next I'm going to start teaching myself jazz and new-age piano. |

| | <-- That guy looks like me, but old. | | Join Date: Aug 2002 Location: Arlington TX | | | In order of starting instruments I played:
Trumpet>Violin>Guitar>Baritone Horn>Piano>Double Bass>Tuba>Bass Guitar>Mandolin>Chapman Stick
Now this iwas not as schizophrenic as it looked. I played trumpet in 6th grade band, and switched to baritone in 7th grade. They made me switch to tuba for marching band in 9th grade.
My sister started violin when I started trumpet. I made the mistake of picking up her violin while she was out of the room, and an hour later, I was better on it than she was. So Mom made me take orchestra in 7th grade. Later in the year the teacher let me switch to DB. But The school I moved to wouldn't let you be in orchestra AND band. So I quit Orchestra.
My grampa was an old jazz cat. ( He had played western swing with the Lightcrust Doughboys.) He was a guitar player and said he would give me pointers on guitar. I played guitar for a couple of years. But the DB and tuba had taught me to listen for the low end. So in 9th grade, I saved my lich money for about seven months and bought my first bass guitar. I haven't looked back.
Sometimes I would get interested in a different sound and learn a new instrument to have that sound or to better understand the other instruments I already played. Sometimes it worked (keys, mandolin) sometimes it didn't (Chapman Stick)

| | | | Piano --> Trumpet --> Bass, and soon I'm picking up a guitar. I can still play some piano and trumpet, but primarily I'm a bassist and vocalist right now. |

| | Banned | | Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Auburn, Washington | | Same situation as you. Sister has an acoustic guitar (that she's playd maybe for like 100 hours on over the course of 5 years. Yeah) that I picked up and liked playing it.
But I decided I wanted a bass. Parents persuaded me to get a regular guitar. Bass is boring. Guitars are cool. So I did. It was fun (and I started learning it again), but in the back of my mind I still wanted a bass. So I just bought a bass and found new teacher, who also started on guitar and switched to bass, albeit he actually got good at guitar before switching.
I eventually want to be able to play both well. |

I still play all three. Any hardcore bassists, feel free to shoot me now for being a guitar player.

I broke the B and E strings and essentially played the lower strings as a bass. I always was able to pick out the basslines and was inherently attracted to them so I started playing the bass lines. Made sense to get a bass after that.
