If you are starting out from absolute scratch then, yes I would recommend this book. It gives a good general over view of everything to do with playing bass, including some basic theory.

Another book which is very good IMO is :

http://www.amazon.com/Leonard-Bass-M.../dp/0793563836

The three volumes together (as in the link) in one edition, is money well spent IMO. Each volume has it's own CD.

A good site to check out is : www.studybass.com

+1 I have both books that I'm learning from. Real good starting point.

+ another 1

All 3 resources good, in my also-a-beginner opinion.
I did acoustic and some electric guitar many years ago, getting back into playing music.
Picked up a bass a couple of months ago after wanting to forever.

There is some overlap and some difference of opinion but nothing 'wrong' is presented - there are just different approaches. One may be better for you.

I have found that the Dummies book will get you into playing recogniseable (arguably useful) lines faster. I found this quite encouraging. Your experience may be slightly different.
