I told my guitarist friend that I'm going to try out a MIJ Fender Special Jazz (1987), the model that the guy from Guns and Roses has been using for 30 years. I showed him this video as an example of it's sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC8N_betq4Y
Then we both wondered... the bass sounds so good, so what is the guitar doing?
His mind was blown. The guitars sound like they're played through a cheap multi-effect but then it hit us - Guitarists strive to get that tone
which usually means tons of low end crunch and then end up fighting the bass' frequencies and making the entire mix sound muddy.
Guitars should pew pew pew on top while the bass is boom boom booming on the bottom.
