Bass is important? Guitarist's mind = blown

I told my guitarist friend that I'm going to try out a MIJ Fender Special Jazz (1987), the model that the guy from Guns and Roses has been using for 30 years. I showed him this video as an example of it's sound:

Then we both wondered... the bass sounds so good, so what is the guitar doing?

This:

His mind was blown. The guitars sound like they're played through a cheap multi-effect but then it hit us - Guitarists strive to get that tone which usually means tons of low end crunch and then end up fighting the bass' frequencies and making the entire mix sound muddy.

Guitars should pew pew pew on top while the bass is boom boom booming on the bottom.

Yeah thats always been my approach. My favorite guitar player to work with, he'd write songs on acoustic guitar that sounded full-range, then we'd jam the song and I'd formulate a heavy bottom bassline, then he'd re-write his electric guitar part to jive with it. We didnt step on each other at all, and the song wouldnt sound right without one or the other (unless he played his acoustic version)

Duff is an incredible, under-appreciated bassist.

The guitar track doesn't sound too chintzy to me, and the bass could sound even fuller, but you are absolutely right that the guitars should jangle jangle and the bass should boom boom.

The guitar sounds great to me, definately doesn't sound cheap. The bass sounds worse in my opinion.
