Play on the side away from the guitar player.

In our band the bass plays on the vocalist's right hand side so they can hear the beat. We only have a drum on the larger (paying) gigs. The lead guitar is also on the vocalist's right hand side.

Yes the rhythm guitar plays on the opposite side of the bass. When we have the drums - the drum is on the back row in the middle between the bass and rhythm guitar.

When we have the pedal steel with us the pedal steel, playing echo melody, is on the vocalist's right hand side with the lead guitar. They share lead breaks. With this mix the bass moves to the left hand side of the vocalists. Rhythm guitar moves to the back row with the drums.

Placement revolves around letting the vocalists hear the beat. We drag out the floor monitors only on the "big" gigs.

What we do --

Tom side in case the drummer is a heavy hitter. It'll save your ears!

And the question should be: on which side of you should the drummer set up?

I mean, you're not off to the side, are you?

I like having the drummer to my left- I stare blankly at my neck(jr-high style, babee ), and this way he's right there. if the front guy is over in that direction, I can watch him for cues as well.

I can move around somewhat, but the drummer can't - so I always check with them where they prefer to be able to see me. We do a lot of visual cues, so what works for him works. With current band I am on the left..

I tend top go to the Right hand side of the stage as I like to be to the right of the Drummer, but it depends on the lineup of the band.

I prefer the Guitard to be on my left (assuming he's right handed) - so I can eyeball his left hand in case I need to see the chords :-).

I prefer the Keyboard Player to my right so I can eyball his Left hand and/or read his chart for the same reason.!!.

Thanks for all the advice - we're primarily alt so I'll try the right of drummer and see how that works for now. I've been wearing hearing protection for sometime now. I'm a wuss.

I tend to go on the hi-hat side of the drummer. Not for any great reason really, but I have had the problem of resonating the floor tom if my cab is too close on that side in the past.

I like to glance over at the bass drum foot from time to time, especially with a new drummer, so whatever will alow you to do this.
