bass and the offensive line

I wouldn't be the first to call the bassist the offensive line of the band. Crucial, yet under-appreciated, both jobs require setting others up to bask in the lion's share of the glory, while you construct and maintain the foundation. Also, those not in-the-know will only notice you when you mess up. (plus, we can tend to be, shall we say, oafish)

So my question is, how many past or current hogs do we have here on TB? I play guard for Amherst College.

(and to our friends in the UK and elsewhere, is there another noticeable metaphor in cricket, rugby, or soccer (sry, football)?)

Actually I was always on the other side of the line. The reeeeally old guys would call my position a 'Defensive Center'. The pretty old guys (like me) would call it a 'Nose Guard'. And nowadays, for some reason, I keep hearing it called a 'Nose Tackle'.

I don't know why they can't make up their minds.

I agree with Bard2dbone. Bass is a defensive position. The bass and drums' primary responsibilities are keeping the lead guitar and vocalist form getting sacked. I defend the pocket jealously.

I would say bass players are members of the offensive line, since it's responsible for creating the pocket.
