bass pedals - not taurus, not synth

Sign in to disble this ad
we're shuffling the lineup of our band soon and as a result i'll probably have to cop some keyboard and guitar parts whilst holding down the low end on foot pedals.

the only tone i really want is that classic organ foot pedal one, fat and woody. i'm not interested in synth pedals and ideally would like to avoid midi. just one box with pedals.

does anybody sell such a unit?

alternatively what modules can offer just that straight round organ sound?

sorry if this has been discussed to death, in my search i found mostly taurus related stuff....

many thanks, toby.

EHX Freeze might be able to work with some creative thinking/playing.

thanks but that's not really what i'm talking about, not a stompbox but a 13 pedal unit, you know like what you find on the bottom of a hammond type organ?

cool pedal though.

I don't believe anyone makes an all-in-one organ pedal board anymore, but you may have luck finding one on the 'Bay.
If I may ask, why "no MIDI or synth" ? A Roland PK-5 MIDI'd to a small synth module would cost less than $1k, would only take one MIDI cable connection, and would not only provide the organ bass sound you want, but hundreds of other sounds as well. After all, most giggable organs are synthesizers - synthesizers that are voiced to reproduce organ tones.

i guess i don't want midi because i just want one unit, we've got enough gear going onstage as it is. i just want a box with a jack input, maybe volume and tone but probably not.

i mean not synth as in i'm not going for the taurus sound or any other "synth" tone, just the good ol' organ bass.

also i don't need hundreds of sounds, just one, but i see the value of having a midi controller in case my needs change.

but i thought there wouldn't be anything in terms of standalone units, the roland pk-5 seems like a good option, can anyone recommend a good module for the sound i'm looking for? maybe something really simple, i don't do well with too many variables...

Here you go - 1100 sounds, under $375 bucks.

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...ku=485747#used

Combine with this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Roland-PK-5A-Dyn...item20b6ad8d54

And you have a versatile & portable bass pedal rig for under $900.

This would be far lighter than any "all in one units" would be, and this is similar to what I used before I got this;

I love the Moog Taurus for what I do, but being an "all in one" analog unit, it weighs about 3 times more than the Roland setup I'm recommending to you. Good luck in your quest!

Nice try, really nice try, but the shipping to Aussie is gonna kill him.

Intended as reference prices, and to illustrate the potential for an affordable bass pedal rig. I'm willing to bet that the Aussie music stores & local used gear vendors would yeild similar results.

Oh, I know what you're talking about. But you don't want MIDI, and you don't want Taurus...

And, cherry on top, it's gotta be less than $1000 AUS.

Good luck with that.

i said i'd like to avoid midi and the op even asks for recommendations for synth modules. i don't think i'm being that unreasonable.

Don't be laying any bets. I'm pretty sure Aussie musos are in the same licenced distributor inflated price hellhole as us in Kiwi land.

"Take US manufacturers rec. retail price, add freight like you were having units airmailed individually from US (not shipped x PRC), add markup on freight, add a bit more for good measure, convert to local dollars and stick it to 'em."

You can get that sound with a synth set to a sine wave, that's basically all Hammonds did, they stacked multiple sine waves on top of each other.

Perhaps I can help?
I have done exactly what you are trying to do, and it worked surprisingly well.
Trying to find a set of pedals with basic built in bass sounds is near impossible to find, and they are often old, unreliable, and may not sound that great. Trust me, I've had many pedal set ups over the years.
I understand wanting to keep everything really simple, but I just think a midi set is much easier, and you have much better sounds.
If you have a keyboard already set up, just plug the pedals in.
If not, plug into an alesis micro synth, a micro Korg, a cheapie casio whatever.
I have 3 different pedal sets currently, but have gone through many others.
For new, the pk5 is probably your best bet. Had a set and they are good. Can run on batteries which can simplify your set up.

i find it kind of dificult to think of anything that could be what you want that ISN'T synth....

how else could the sound be generated?

not trying to bash or anything, just honestly curious, i'm not that knowledgeable about what constitutes "synth" and "not synth, but not generated organicly"...

Well i guess hammond organs were electromechanical, so technically.....
One thing i wanted to say, you really have to hear the sounds in context. By themselves, some of the sounds my pedals make or trigger are not that great, but can be just right once all the other parts are there.

You can roll your own if you are so inclined. I've just started a website, and am hoping to help people make their own organ pedals out of donor organ (pardon the pun) pedals. You could use your Mac or PC notebook for the sound module as well. It'd be MIDI though, but less than $1000 US if you already have a notebook computer to use.
MIDI Pedals | Build Your Own MIDI Pedals (I haven't gone 'live' with the site, so pardon the construction). Please take the survey on the home page though!

Toby said less than $1000, and rolling your own plus the price of your laptop would be well under $1000 I think. If you had a donor keyboard, and laptop, and all you had to buy were the organ pedals, maybe less than $100.

i think the Basyn harness kit is around $50?
And one octave pedals go for well under $50 every day.
So maybe Toby's post was a typo?
I bought one of my pedal units from a guy that makes his own. very well thought out with tons of features.
There are a few peeps making pedals and selling them on ebay.
Or, again, for an off the shelf solution, look for a roland pk-5.
They go for $250 to $500 used.
