Umm - does being considered by many to be anal retentive mean you have OCD?

I think so. I started playing guitar in medical school and since have switched to bass. I'm 6'2 215 with big hands so I guess I fit that stereotype. The thing I always liked about bass was that it was a chance to solo the whole song. How do I practice this. I'll take the the verse to a tool song like the patient and play it constantly. Trying to make sure the notes that are on the beats are accented. I hum it and try to separate the different voices of of movement in the riff and accent them. Then there is a point where the bass line decends from G-D I adjust my attack here to get a little fret buzz and grit then switch back to smooth. So yea i think that it makes a good use of my ocd. To me that is why some bands are good. Good band are built on good bass players. You can't dance to a song where the guy constantly looses rhythm and breaks up that groove. Knowing where those accents goes helps establish the groove pulse, creshendo decreshendo of a song. If heads bob and they go into a trance. Then the OCD has worked. I love bass. I don't think I'll ever be one of those root-fifth bassist. If I had to play that then those notes would sing. Some would be played louder than others. Some I'd bang out some would just be there. Yea I think I'm OCD and bass is my instrument. The most successful bassist were OCD. The most successful bands had good bassists. I'm trying to build a band as we speak. Learn the theory, build the chops, network do it all basically. rhythm guitards only solid latin, middle eastern style percussion, female singer, cello player flute or some higher register instrument. Am I OCD and controlling?

I think everyone can be a little OCD when it comes to certain things. That said, I think my guitarist is the one with the most OCD in my band.

My OCD was worse before I started playing bass. Things had to end in a 5 or 0. Now they can end in 0, 3, 5, or 7.

Yup!
I just spent the last 3 solid weeks studying sequential secondary substitute dominants, there related ii chords and the 'correct' scales according to the Beerkely college theory.

1) The beerkely chord scale theory is not a flexable theory in my oppinion. Its very involved and takes sheer relentless ocd to learn and apply it. It took all the freedom out of music for me. Now I cant help but reduce music to formulas and endless mathamatical problems to be solved.

2) Ocd made me a better player at the expense of my enjoyment.

3) Im not gonna make a dime playing music ever, soooo whats this all for?

Its all for ocd I guess.

This would be defined as "Drive and Ambition" Not OCD

OCD is not a choice it's a Mental malady.

Maybe so.
But I hate wakin up from a dead sleep just to run over to my books to 'figure' out something on paper because I was dreaming about some mathamatical snag that I cant yet solve.

Its like I want answers to questions that I don't even know how to ask.

Btw, not knocking beerkely, I wish I could master that stuff.

Since OCD actually only effects about 1% of the population, I would say no. There is a big difference between being a perfectionist and having OCD.

I think lead guitar players and keyboardists are far more prone to OCD then bass players.

I'd say the high end trend that's been happening since about '92 is a sure factor in bass ocd.

Maybe people with OCD are attracted to being a bass player. I doubt playing bass causes OCD.

I'd have to say more perfectionist than OCD. And I am very particular about certain things. I also really do love a good string cheese.
