Bass Players who get shafted in movies or on TV

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, I admit it, I'm a LOST fan. I was really pissed off at the end of this season when they killed off Charlie (bass player for the fictional band Drive Shaft)

This got me thinking... How many other bass players get shafted in movies or on TV?

Another that came to mind was "This is Spinal Tap". Who's cocoon didn't open??? You got it, the bass player's!

Any others??

OK - not quite OT, but this morning I woke up extra early - switched on VH1 and much to my surprise, THE WHO! LIVE! DOING "MY GENERATION" - COOL!

Ok, yeah, cool if you are a Pete Townshend, Keith Moon or Roger Daltry fan - but our friend, the venerable Mr. Entwistle was COMPLETELY IGNORED BY THE CAMERA/DIRECTOR!!! Even during his bass solos!!! Come on... come on... puhleeze! I know there was a time when if you didn't play guitar, drums or sing, you essentially didn't exist - but seriously... could they not tell where the action was?

Even a lobotimized chimp would know better... "hey, there's a solo going on... hmmm... sounds deeper than the guitar... shoot the guitar! He must be playing one of those amazing, 'you can't tell I'm playing' solos! Billy - focus on the guitar!! NO, wait... it's not the guitar... I was wrong... Ah! It must be a drum solo!!! Yeah... Shoot Keith!!! OH? He's not playing either... Roger!! It must be Roger!!! Damn... it's over... who could that have been?" Oh well, doesn't matter. As long as people got to see guitars, drums and the singer, who cares?

a-hole! LOL

How about the movie "That Thing You Do".
The bass player doesn't even get a character name in in the movie, he just referred as "the bass player". Even in the credits rolling at the end, the character is named 'TB Player'.

The bass player on That Thing You Do. What was his name? Oh right, he didn't have one, he was just the bass player.

Piggybacking off tZer's post, pretty much any live show on TV regardless of if the bass player is a root-noter or a virtuoso. Unless they are a solo act or highly known as a bass monster then us bass players get no respect.

Quite a bummer, really.

Reminds me of the CSI:New York episode where Det. Mac Taylor plays bass (he's a bassist in a band according to the plot). Basically the scene is in a club and two female police officers (I think, if my memory is correct) are in a bar. The band comes on and Det. Mac Taylor is the bassist playing on stage. The shot is so bad that you can't really see he's actually got a bass, what with the people in the way, and then he's only on camera for about 5 seconds.
PS The episode is 'Stuck on You', series 2.

I've allways thought being a bass player was a supporting role.
I'm too involved with keeping the groove together than worring about not getting any of the Limelight.
If you forget that I'm there ,then I've done my job.
I'm turning down work from bands.

Actually, Gary Sinise who plays Mac Taylor on CSI new york, really does play bass in his own band on his time off.
Get this, his bands name is; Lieutenant Dan

In the CSI:Crime Scene Investigation miniature murders series the first murder was a bass player

he sure did have a whole bunch of cute groupies around his house when they were hauling his body away though.

I'm with you there. This isn't about me or any other bass player getting some limelight, it's about how bass players in general are portrayed in movies or on TV.

Yeah, but at least we came off better than the drummers who all met unfortunate ends - spontaneous combustion, etc.

That's true. Drummers get the shaft pretty regularly in movies too. I'm remembering the drummer in "That Thing You Do" who gets abandonded by his mates before they get to record.

Did anything bad happen to the guitarists in Spinal Tap?

Nothing really, but their narcissistic personalities were put on display for all to see which is pretty bad in my book.
