Bass playing in an aprtment building

Sign in to disble this ad
I am going to be moving into a new apartment tomorrow and it will be the first time I lived in an aprtment and have bass gear. I have a 100 watt amp so its somewhat loud. i was just wondering if its aproblem. i want to be considerate of the neighbors in the apartments around me.

Anyone else play and live in an aprtment? is your playing disturbing to your neighbors?

I lived in apartments for 20 years. I always tried to be considerate and keep the volume to low practice levels. If there was a time that I knew the neighbors weren't home I might let it rip for a while, but mostly I had to keep it quiet at home and save the stage volume for the stage.

I live in a condo & practice through my computer with headphones. I can play along with iTunes, or some other softwares that let me loop segments that I want to repeat. Nobody ever wakes up or complains.

This is not nearly as problematic a situation as it was, even as recently as 20 years ago.

There are even some gig-worthy amps out there that enable silent practice with an external input.

a cheap alternative is a Zoom B1X pedal. Headphone friendly, built in drum machine (metronome) and bunch of effects to mess around with. Bought mine for $100 3-4 years ago, so they must have come down a bit by now.

It depends on how sturdily made your apartment building is. If the walls and floors are thick concrete, no worries. If not, the neighbors will notify you, perhaps with a Molotov cocktail. What does practicing alone at really high volumes accomplish anyway? It's kinda a form of wanking, with little relevance to an actual playing situation.

Yeah, a lot depends on the construction of the building, whether you will be upstairs or at ground level, etc.

Also a little thing called a volume knob. I've been playing in my bottom apartment for 3 years with no complaints from people above or to the side. It doesn't need to be loud to practice
