Bass playing in Drop C

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright Dudes!

I've just joined a band which play predominantly in drop C tuning. I paid out of my own pocket to get my bass setup for this tuning, however my "E" string (now tuned to C) sounds like a wet piece of meat flapping around on my fretboard rather than a knee quivering punch thump.

Just wondering if my technique was wrong or if there was some equipment thatd help me out with this? or some setup trick?!?!

Im using a passive Fender jazz with roundwounds through a 6x10 Ashdown ABM Evo II.

Any help would be seriously appreciated guys!

Thanks!

I'd get a 5 string set and tune UP from B to c. It's only a half step, and the strings will feel tighter.

B string for the E
E string for the A,
A string for the D, you get the idea.

Might have to mod the nut, but if that's how you're keeping the bass for the time being, it's worth the 10-15 bucks.

Mon's got it, your problem is string gauge, the bummer for you is getting that bass setup was pointless now, once the string gauge is changed, you'll need the bass set up different.

Yeah, try a very heavy gauge 4 set or a light-medium 5 string set, using only the bottom four. Yeah, it'll take a bit of setup, but it's probably for better than how you have it now. With light strings I'd usually have to raise the action a lot to get a good (well, passable) drop-c sound. Not fun to play. Thankfully we play in drop D now.

Alright Guys! (original poster!)

managed to get it sorted with a heavier gauge string set

I didnt go for the 5 string (low B) option as i didnt think my neck would take it too well so ended up with a 110' on the top and raised action

Sounds awesome!

Thanks for everyones help!

Why did you spam this in so many forums? You could have just posted it in the correct forum
