Is bass sometimes to much on some recordings?

Do some of you feel that sometimes bass on a recording is to thick or have to huge in the mix on some recordings?

The reason I ask is because I let one of my friends who happens to be a professional and talented bass player hear my unreleased trio recording. I'm using my fretless Subcontra bass and he felt that the bass was to huge in the mix.

It's the same bass used on my Low C# Theory recording for those who are familiar with that cd.

I think some bass players are pretty much accustomed to bass just sitting gently in the mix(and I'm not saying that that is the case with my friend).

Personally, bass can never be upfront enough in the mix for me; even in a solo, I feel the bass could have a bit more presence

Honestly, though, I am yet to hear a non bass-specific album where I found the bass to be too prominent in the mix.

I think there is point when it gets to be too much, but that doesn't happen very often. I think that point would be where the parts of the other instruments are getting difficult to discern. You'd really have to be overbearing.

I agree with this 100%. I think that a lot of people get uncomfortable with bass that stands out, especially those that play more traditional melody/out front instruments.

In my opinion the bass is never huge enough. I would be so much happier listening to certain bands and songs if the bass was higher in the mix or eq'd better.

I do think that when it comes to recording/mixing MY bass guitar, I like it to sit in the mix, with it being upfront just a bit.

I also believe that in different recording sessions, and what make for the right formula for that particular song, any instrument could be made to stand in front of the song.

I as a bass player, most all the time record with my bass up front. Thinking it's in the mix.

Agreed, usually it's the opposite. A balanced mix is always what should be strived for, with vocals on top (if there are any). All instruments should be heard clearly in the mix. Thats what I prefer. Nothing should drown out another instrument unless it's a solo.

A lot also depends on the system you listen through or adjusted for.
