My current theory teacher studied at Berklee and seems to be mainly into guitar but he brings a bass and teaches me theory really well on it. I've had two other guitar teacher teach me on the bass but this guy does a really good job. Give a teacher a chance before you discount them!

This may be true if you aren't a beginner. But a guitar player- "teacher" trying to teach bass is like an Indy driver trying to teach someone to operate a Fire Truck. They are 2 different instruments with very different technique issues. Fundamentals need to be learned on the bass, particularly hand and finger technique in the beginning to avoid bad habits. A guitar teacher, unless they have also specialized in bass, isn't going to be able to impart that.

Yes Indeedy, and I see an even more fundamental problem with the idea: the mindset between the two instruments in regards to their role in a band is completely different

1 - For every guitarist who really enjoys hearing walking bass lines, counterpoint, and passing tones within bass lines; there are probably 25 or more whose idea of the "perfect bass player" is someone who only plays the root of a guitar chord or strict unison with a single-line guitar part

2 - For every guitarist who is able to keep their ego sufficiently in check and support the song, even if that requires spending minutes at a time playing "boring" rhythm parts; there are 25 or more who "only play lead"

Having one of those 25 (as opposed to the Golden 1/25) teach a beginning bass player their proper role in a group setting can't be a good thing IMHO
