Beach Music

I've been learning bass for about four months now, and my primary place to play is at church. This playing has been great, but I also want to play bass elsewhere, as I really love the blues, and have grown very fond of Beach Music (Carolinas, not Californa Surf).

We have a place at North Myrtle Beach, and I have been spending a lot of time there at some places that have a lot of live beach bands. The music is extremely popular, especially with the older crowd that grew up in the sixties, and a gray haired (PREMATURE ) like me would actually be pretty young for these bands. Most bands are very established personell wise, but I thought that maybe next summer I would get my name out as a filler for those emergency situations, or even start jamming with some others that want to play this music.

I recently bought some CD compilations of the most popular beach songs, and was very impressed with the bass lines used. It has a particular beat so that people can dance the "Shag" to, but other than that these songs seem to cross from blues to rock and roll, to R&B. When I really started listening to the bass lines, they were much more envolved than I thought, and I believe it will be very satisfying as a bass player.

Does any one have any experience with this type of music? I would like to hear some thoughts on this genre, and get all the advise I can about getting into the beach music scene.
