Two parts of the same story, actually. The WoS was concieved based on observations during LSD induced synethesia.

Bear, along with Bob Thomas, designed the avatar you see next to my name. Of course the one they designed didn't have the earth in it, but the iconic red/blue circle with lightning bolt. They designed it to slap on all of their gear so it could be identified easily during load out.

The lightening bolt itself was copied off a billboard, though. The full story is at Bear's site, thebear.org, which was still up when I checked on Monday.
