Question Beastie boys appeal question (inspired by t-shirt thread)

Sign in to disble this ad
There have been very few acts that have completely obliterated demographic appeal, and have ended up in just about everyone's music collection somewhere. The Beastie Boys are on that list for sure. The career spans decades, and GAzillions of records world wide, so I ask the following question: Do you own any Brooklyn's finest? And what are some other bands that would be on this list beyond the obvious like Beatles/Stones/Who?

Kaiser Chiefs and Kasabian.
Great appeal, they go down as well with a group of 20 year olds on a night out in Rochdale as they do with an old school metalhead (me). And my Dad likes them and they're not Hawkwind, so they have to be doing soemthing right...

The broad appeal might be there, but still WAY too new to fit the thrust of this poll. Kaiser Chiefs rock!

Not all "bands" per se:

Def Lepard
Elton John
Michael Jackson
Janet Jackson
Prince
Queen
Madonna

to a lesser degree
Devo
Sade

All have crossover appeal. Both Queen and Elton scored high on the Black charts in the 70's.

Support for Beasties being universally accepted:

Until recently my ring tone was "Brass Monkey" and I got comments or singalongs from everyone who heard it. Age, race, social group -- didn't matter. Everyone.

License to Ill was the first tape I ever bought (1987). I was 12. Paul's Boutique was also a big one for me. After that, not so much.

I hated them when they first came out, pegging them as a white rap fad.

Then Check Your Head came out in 1992...
"So What'cha Want" and "Something's Got to Give" won me over, and now I am a Beastie Boys fanatic.

And they kicked the door open in my mind when it came to Rap and Hip Hop in general.

I agree with a bunch of things posted, but some fall into that "been around so long" category. I'm looking at the acts that were in everybody's ears early on, and then stayed.

Prince - DEFINITELY!

The Beastie Boys killed off the Backstreet Boys, who couldn't like them?

I think I have all of the beasties cds. I would put the RHCP in the same category.
