Beatles Anthology

With the Hollywood writers strike and not much on TV lately,
I decided to bust out the Beatles Anthology (which I haven't watched since it came out 11 years ago.)

Last night I finished up tape #3. It was during the Coliseum show in Washington that it dawned on me that they had no vocal monitors. Once I realized that, I paid even closer attention to the vocals. They were great! I can't believe the audio of the band performance was so good despite all the screaming fans.

I admit that I am a fan, but their story is pretty incredible. I've also realized that there were so many pieces of the puzzle that came together to make it what it was. The time/era, the four musicians that ultimately became "The Band", the manager, producer and incredible talent. A once in a lifetime moment in time that some forty years later, still amazes me.

I love watching the Anthology. I picked it up on DVD awhile back and spent the next day watching all of it in one sitting. I loaned it to my girlfriend's parents and they absolutely loved it also (Girlfriend's mom was actually at one of the california shows)

Amazing DVD set

Alas, my set is VHS. (That's all that was available when it came out.)

Tape #4 last night.
(Boston Legal was bumped by Dancing with the Stars.)

I've never heard the Hollywood Bowl album but would love to.
George Martin was talking about how tough it was to work with the three track tape to bring out the instruments and "get over" the non stop screaming. They played an audio clip from what was released years later and it sounded pretty good.

Again, no monitors, great harmonies. Gobs of talent.

I have to break out my DVD's again... it's been a while. Wonderful stuff!

If you enjoy that, check out the Concert for George DVD. That one is really amazing... and has Ringo and Paul playing live together for the first time since the 'final' rooftop concert almost 40 years ago.

I've only seen bits and pieces of Concert for George on PBS.

I also want to pick up The McCartney Years DVD. (Just came out.)
I have Paul McCartney "Back in the US" and that is a good one.
(from 2002) That band he pieced together is awesome.
It is a bit awkward watching Paul and Heather Mills all kissy face now, with the split and all.

I did pick up the Traveling Wilburys release a few months back and it included a DVD of the band in the studio. Good stuff too!

I Googled "Hollywood Bowl CD" and although there are bootleg versions, it appears they never officially released it on CD. Too bad.
