Well that thread about U2 vs. the Beatles got me thinking. Is there any band that is comparable to the Beatles when it comes to the bands they inspired, the varied music they created, and the over all popularity?
Keep it to one band per person, that way it gives others a chance to voice their opinion! So choose one band.
---------------------------------------------
My choice: Black Sabbath
Though they openly site Beatles as their inspiration, I think these guys have become god-like in the past 10 years. They've inspired virtually all heavy metal, and arguably created the genre. Their popularity waned a bit in the 80's, but even with Dio heading them they changed metal. The devil horn hand gesture was invented by Dio when he was lead singer. The longevity of their members held up just like the Beatles as well. Ozzy has a terrific solo career, and despite being ignored by some, the Dio era did some good stuff. Iommi's solo projects are also full of great heavy music.
Iommi can create the most heavy of riffs with ease, and he has some of the most memorable guitar sequences of our times. Geezer Butler is an amazing bassist that works suprisingly well in a genre not known for bass. Bill Ward has some of the most primal, driving drumming and it fits their style so well. Then you have Ozzy. No one sounds like Ozzy unless they are trying actively to sound like Ozzy. Few singers are as recognizable.

I'm still going with Zeppelin. They'll be getting played 60 years from now, right along with the Beatles. Give both bands a few centuries, and they might rate right up there with the great classical composers. Maybe.

I'd add to that A Band Of Gypsies, or the Jimi Hendrix Experience, whichever you prefer.

Sixty years from today, I'd bet people will still be playing Beatles songs. I doubt the same can be said of most other "well-known' bands of the last 40 years. | i agree with this. as i was reading the op, the classical composer comparison (say that 10 times fast) is what i thought. as jaberwock777 said, perhaps zeppelin. my vote is the beach boys. quality wise they are in the same league. as far as being as influential, brian wilson & co. are huge to many musicians, just not as much as the beatles. peace, jeff |

Artists like Zeppelin and Sabbath had and still are influencing countless musicians but its not like the beatles.

Its not like I dont like them they have just never really grabbed my attention like other bands of that era have.
I would rate The Who higher anyway

Back to the original question, I don't know if the Beatles' music inspired the most bands, but they opened the gates. I was in high school when they became popular, and there just weren't that many self-contained performing bands before them. Their popularity just caused an explosion and paved the way for later bands. |

Helped pioneer the Death Metal genre and completely shattered the rules for it with each new album.
Obviously can't compare to the Beattles, but not much can, really. They are like the Jesus of music. You can have your Pope's here and there, but I doubt there will be a second Jesus, unless we figure out a way to make music through smell or something. amirite? |

Like Zep, Sabbath, The stones, I hear just as many people start playng music because of this group, and "everyone" has at least one "floydian" spacy breakdown in one of their songs.
