The Beautiful Portuguese Language And A Beautiful Voice: Jane Monheit

Sign in to disble this ad
Please take a few minutes and watch to this video; it's Jane Monheit singing in Portuguese, one of the most beautiful languages in the world, in my opinion. And her voice is so sweet, so soothing.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQoMPavS9Kc

I've seen her 3 times, and when you see her live, she sounds just like the recording.

Here's another video of hers you might like: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDQiOnttN9Q

If you're into mellow music, I think you'll really like these.

Enjoy.

Mike
P.S. The first video has a one minute intro, but is worth the time you'll invest.

Her accent is too heavy.

Well, that's a Murican for you. I know Mike Kanan a little bit (his wife Stephanie is a bassist) and he's a nice cat.

STORIES TO TELL, Flora Purim singing INSENSATEZ (How Insensitive), there's a line where she has just this little catch in her voice that really triggers the MUST HAVE WOMAN NOW response...

Speaking of singing in your native language, check out Sanni Orasmaa's tune VANHA Something or another at her myspace page; she's singing in Finnish and it's just wonderful.

Finally! A couple of responses!

Thanks, guys.

Ed, I must agree about Michael Kanan being a nice guy.

Once, when Jane was playing at The Blue Note, I was sitting right next to the piano, and he and I talked for about 10 minutes before the show. Very cool guy.

Anyone who hasn't seen him play live doesn't know what a truly great piano player he is! His chord changes are so smooth and subtle!

Seeing/hearing him play is almost as much fun as seeing/hearing Jane sing.

Mike

Yeah, I can hear the difference, although I don't speak Portuguese.

Perhaps a voice coach told her to do that for dramatic effect?

Thanks for the video, Allex.

So beautiful! Some accent, that is true since Portuguese is not her native language, but really nothing so critical that would keep me from enjoying her singing IMO. Great clip, Mike!

Thanks much, Richbass53.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Mike, do you have her newest album Surrender? Great stuff. Ivan Lins is a guest on it.

Jane is such a unique voice. I love her duet on Legends of Jazz with John Pizzarelli too.

No, Bernie, I don't have Surrender, but I've heard some of it, and plan to buy it soon.

I have all her albums, except Surrender, and her Christmas album. I also have her video at The Rainbow Room, and I've even had my picture taken with her.

If you ever have half a chance to see her - SEE HER!

She has real talent, and you will remember her performance for a very long time.

Thanks for replying; I had thought this thread was forgotten.

Ed, you and I have crossed paths often, but never become
acquainted, even though I am an Ex pat NY'er, and my wife is
a Finn (of Brooklyn descent, no less). DURRL and I are friends though.

Thanks for the link. Finnish is a strange but
wonderful language, and I recently saw a Karelian group
doing the traditional music. The coffee and pulla was great too.

My daughter is now living in NYC, so maybe one day I can catch FOGHORN in action.

All the best for the New Year,

Thor

Good to see you on the boards again, Thor.

Happy New Year to you, too!

You too! Sanni is probably my favorite singer in the world, I've only had a few chances to play with her and now that she's back in Finland....

Lemme know if make it back this way, we'll hang.

The incomparable Mariza...

Then there's Mariza... I got to see her perform live in LA at the House of Blues a couple years back.. She's really fantastic. She's Portuguese, but was born in Mozambique.

The greatest of them all.

The Queen of Fado. Amalia Rodrigues. The greatest Portuguese singer of all time. I was very fortunate to have seen her perform.

Bernie, I just bought Surrender, and MAN, IS THIS ALBUM GOOD !!! It's playing on the stereo as I write this.

Jane's getting better with each album. This one is produced just right; the string arrangements and choice of songs are perfect.

WOW! http://www.janemonheitonline.com/store/

Thanks for the heads-up, Bernie.
