I'm still kinda disturbed by the fact that he's been playing since 7 and NEVER realized the importance of bass. I mean yeah, tons of guys criticize us, but I'm pretty sure they have to see itsimportance. Most of the guys who criticize us are 15 year old metalheads who know no better.

You know, a lot of "us" are bi-instrumental. I was a guitarist for... well, lets just say "a long time" and leave it at that... before I picked up the bass. I cringe every time someone uses that patently offensive word to denote guitarists - I am one, in addition to being a bassist.

Bass takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master. Sort of like racquetball.

Someone has mastered bass? I thought it was more like a lifetime of learning. Just an interesting notion to consider, perhaps.

Oh, and I do not, and never have called a guitarist, a "guitard".

I think 'drummer' is pejorative enough without having to slang it up.

I'm... I'm just floored!

It was a real eye-opener to be sure - especially after reading the 'Another pointless argument' thread.

Thanks for posting that, MIJ!

Can I propose a distinction: The term Guitard isn't a derogotory synonym for guitarist in general. It's an ironic label for the insensitive, abnoxious and self-absorbed ones! It's a minority subgroup. But we've most of us met one or two.

Would anyone call Pat Metheny or George Harrison or Kurt Cobain guitards? Not unless they're blindly vindictive against all guitarists.

But the term seems to serve its purpose as a handy combination of: guitarist + jerk. (I use the polite form. :^D )
