One avenue for new music that I didn't see mentioned, but I think is worth mentioning. Since I've been working sporadically, I have perforce been at home with my kids more, watching the TV shows they watch. The plethora of great bands I've never heard of getting exposure through kid's TV astounds me.
There's a ton of really great bands doing odd, quirky things with music being marketed on Noggin and channels like it. Yo Gabba Gabba has indie rock bands performing songs, and though they're written for the show, I've sought them out on youtube. Thanks to them, I now know about artists like The Postmarks and The Aquabats; there's a couple of people I see on add breaks whose albums I'd love to get, but I never seem to catch their names. The guy singing the new shoes tune with the harmonica, for one.
I've seen plenty of shows, articles, etc complaining without presenting possible solutions to the record industry's problems to artists. I'm glad they showed different solutions, ideas, and stressed the importance of writing music that you like, regardless of what you do for a living. It has me seriously questioning my motivations for one of the bands I'm in, and whether I want to continue that pursuit in life.
Thanks, for the link, man, that makes two Jauqo-IIIx recommended documentaries that caused me to pause and rethink what I think know about music.

Plus it got me thinking about my motivations, which is always a good thing. |

I watched that once before. Between that video and the other one you posted a few days ago I was really on my soap box preaching to my musician buddies about the state of the recording/record industry.
It's a shame it's so hard to find talented musicians, song writers that can actually play, and it's ironic that it's the record companies are the ones killing everything great about music. Kind of pisses me off. Radio sucks, and the listeners will never hear a truly great rock/pop band again.
In the rock world:
When was the last time we heard a truly great, unique singer that can not only pull it off live, but deliver it.
Who was the last guitarist that made you say "holy $hit!" out loud?
You will never hear another bassist like Geddy, or Entwistle.
I'm sure there are a few examples, but are they on the radio? Now compare the ones you know to how many of them were consistently being singed to a record contract in the 70's and winding up on the radio.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who will disagree. I'm just so uninspired by what I hear in rock and pop today. I'll even go as far to say, if I was 15 years old today and the only way of receiving new music was by radio I don't think I would even considered picking up a bass. |

Music is now bought by pop culture fans and not music fans.

| | | | Nah, music fans are still buying music. It's just they're in the minority now, and corporations who are after the bottom line spend all their effort marketing to the pop culture fans.
I think the most interesting point the movie made is that music fans "give up" because it's so hard to find anything good. The establishment makes it hard because everything you hear on the radio is the result of focus group study, and the internet makes it hard because there is so much to filter through.
I thought I was unique as being one of those people who love music, but rarely buy anything new because I don't have the energy to seek out the good stuff. It was pretty surprising to have the film describe my problem so precisely. |

All the teenage kids I know now, including my own, find their music either from a friend or the internet, not radio or MTV. I know few people who watch MTV or VH-1 for music. They watch those stations know for reality shows not music.
The new page has already turned and Ugly radio & Ron Pearlman's are dead. |

I may pick up the book, but I'm not sure I want to further torture myself.
