Have you ever been auditioned to get a gig or try out for a group?
What have you been asked to play?

as many pros and semi-pros that are on this board, I think you'll get 1000 yesses (plural of yes?)

I have been to many auditions. The material you're asked to play depends on (largely) whether they have their own material or not. If so, you can expect to get a CD or at least a rough tape recording of their stuff, at which point you go and get that stuff so in your head that it will never get out. Learn the songs like they're your own. People are impressed when you know the arrangements by heart.

If they don't have originals, i.e. it's a cover band, usually you'll agree on as little as 4, as many as a dozen or so, covers. Last band that I auditioned for like that we played AC/DC (Sin City and You Shook Me All Night Long), Zep (Rock and Roll), ZZ Top (Tush), Van Halen (Ain't Talkin Bout Love).

Hope that helps.
