Ben Harper Concert?

Has anyone seen Ben Harper in concert?? Is it worth $35 a ticket?? I've never seen him live, nor have I really followed his music but I've heard great things about his bass player and Ben's writing skills..

Suggestions?

I am going on Sept. 2nd to the Toronto show. I have never seen him before but love his style and the bass playing by Juan. I figure I will give him a chance live, and if he isn;t any good I just don't go see him again live and stick to cds like some other bands I have seen live. I am also excited for his openers at this show (Bedouin Soundclash and marley's son....forget his name not Ziggy.....)

Maybe drop into a CD store and have a listen to "Live On Mars" his double live CD. It's the only one I own, even though I have listened to many of his CD's (owned by our guitarist).

Juan Nelson is awesome, but I find Ben Harper's style can be a bit repetetive. They are awesome when they are fired up, but it is often fairly laidback and mellow out sort of stuff. If you're into it, then they're great.

YMMV

All I know is I saw him on austin city limits and his bassist is really, really good. I'd pay 35 bucks just to see that bass player jam.

Where is he playing for 35.00? I was going to atlanta, on the 19th, but the tickets were from 80.00
I know you can see Juan from the farthest seats with no trouble, but I would like to get a decent seat, so I can watch big Juan, and Ben playing slide too. A pretty good seat, is 118.00 .

His bass player, juna nelson, is indeed excellent. If you have enough money to try him out before you see him, get live on mars. Its a live double cd, and if he sounds anywhere near as good live as he does on that, itll be well worth it.

It was originally scheduled at a large amphitheater here in Indy but it was moved to a new park, downtown, by a river.. Should be a cool vibe..

The times I've seen Ben Harper live, the band has been amazing.

The audiences have been annoying because he seems to attract the noodle dancer crowd who don't really have any respect for what's going on onstage--at least he did when I saw him in Atlanta and North Carolina. It's like the audience got lost on the way to a Phish concert....

I.E. the "I'm so whacked out on molly/ecstacy/weed/etc. ad finitum that these guys could be playing in half-step intervals against each other and I'd still think its groovy" croud. The same that at bonnaroo told me that Tre Anastasio was a 'guitar Jedi'. I quickly scurried over to the Doc Watson tent, followed by Soullive and Patti Smith. .

Oh, and according to a few of my trusted music sources, the Ben Harper show is an emotional and powerful showcase. I'll go if he comes near the bible belt. Especially the 'belt buckle' of the Bible belt that is Oklahoma.

I've seen him a few times over the years (that he's been around)... usually as an opener for somebody else... though half the time I went to see him and not really the main act he opened for. Puts on a pretty good show... solid band... and Juan usually throws down a smokin solo at some point.
