Easily one of the most original and one of the first bass solos I know of has to be by John Entwistle on the song My Generation.

Talking Tony Levin

High Heeled Sneakers off of Chuck Mangione's "Alive" album. Tony Levin on bass with Steve Gadd on drums. It still sticks with me 26 years after I first heard it.

Jack Bruce on Frank Zappa's "Apostrophe" is very ballsy.

Tom Kriss of The James Gang plays a nice solo in their version of "Lost Woman Blues".

Tony Levin's intro on Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up". That was what got me into bass.

My vote goes for John Entwistle on My Generation.

Edit: Or John Paul Jones on The Lemon Song.

Maybe not the BEST, but one that just perked my ears up the other day after many many years, for it's soul and deceptive simplicity, and funk--Rick Laird's brief but no-nonsense bass solo on Birds of Fire.

Egocentric Molecules by Jean Luc Ponty. I have no idea who the guy on bass was, but I hate his friggin guts!
