So have you seen one? Im wondering why in this economy they would invest in this? My Wife came up with the idea that they are trying to cash in on the Guitar hero/Rock band trend, that when someone wants a real Guitar it right there.

Ive been in one for a few mins. looks like a guitar center.

Yup. We've had them for months out here (courtesy of BB HQ being right here as well).

I think your wife hit the nail on the head, my friend (as far as I'm concerned, anything that gets kids interested in actually playing music can't be all bad...).

They look VERY much like a Guitar Center.

What's easier for someone who doesn't know anything about music to deal with? The average GC lackey or a Best Buy lackey? They are familiar with best buy as a store. GC can be extremely intimidating for someone who doesn't know what they're looking for (loud music, scary looking people, the extreme bottom line sales goals of GC) someone who doesn't know exactly what they are looking for. So they turn to Best Buy where they likely have bought TVs, appliances, CDs, DVDs, and countless other things.

It's a very smart move, IMO.

Everything's come full circle. Basses are being sold in department stores again.

I am sure Guitar Center is really happy about all this. I think they should start selling hammers and nails and see if they can make a run for Home Depot.

Probably bad timing on the part of Best Buy considering the current state of the economy, but not a bad idea overall. They just opened up the music section of Best Buy here a couple of weeks ago. I went in and it wasn't so bad. Not a bad place for beginner to intermediate players to get some gear. Also not a bad place for anyone of any skill to buy accessories and such. I just fear Best Buy won't be able to balance having a mini-music store with the rest of the store when it comes to customer service.

I will shop there if they don't require me to give my name, address, passport, fingerprints, and next of kin, and then send me to a second counter to rubber stamp my receipt, just so I can buy a stupid $3 cable.

When I went in they had some decent Les Pauls, Strats and Teles. I did notcie a wonderful Black Jaguar Bass, at 699 and a Epi T Bird at 299.
I didnt have time to pick up any thing and play it but its right down from where I work.
I can imagine the possible$$$$ being spent.

the one here is pretty decent. they had a few $3,000+ guitars that will probably be there a while. they have a seperate amp room and a seperate drum room which is nice.

In the Memphis area, there's a Best Buy about 3 blocks from a G.C. I haven't been in; but my son told me that B.B.'s prices are higher than G.C.'s.

My guess is that they (B.B.) will do well in markets that don't have a G.C. around; but maybe not too well when they're in close proximity to one another.

M.A.P. (minimum advertised price) is the new M.S.R.P. So selling at MAP is essentially selling at list price; in other words, it's not a deal. Guitar Center instituted a no-discount MAP selling structure some months back. They're big enough that most competitors are following suit. GC still has some sales, but they're trying to train their customers not to haggle anymore.

It is my understanding that Best Buy means to take Guitar Center head on in the m.i market. BB does roughly eight times the business as GC and has serious cash reserves. GC is saddled with some major debt (I've read over $600 million, but this was some months back) and there have been reports of them considering closing many locations.

I was basing that guess on the fact that their prices here are actually higher than the local G.C. But you're absolutely right as far as B.B. being massive. If they want to, they should be able to underprice G.C. I just haven't seen that happen yet locally.
