Best cheap as chips guitar?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

Recently I've really wanted to start playing guitar (to forward my knowledge for bass playing, of course! )

However, I'm on a budget, and I'm really trying to figure out what I can get for my cash.

My budget is around £50-100 ($100-200 or so), and I'm looking for something decent.

I'm a big yamaha fan and I've been keeping an eye out for Yamaha guitars on ebay, but everything I've gone for has slipped through my fingers so far.

Can anyone recomend anything else? The main thing is I want a pair of double humbuckers (well at least a bridge humbucker...), and the most important thing is a good neck (for learning on).

I know Squire, SX and Stagg do pretty decent basses for the money, but about their guitars? And what about Ibanez? Are they cheap guitars really solid?

Thanks all!

As I was reading your post, I was thinking Ibanez. I think their stuff is a great value, especially if you want double humbuckers.

Do you happen to know models and lines to look for? Unfortunately, when I type Ibanez into ebay and browse the guitars, there's still 100s!

Many thanks

And does anyone think this looks playable? It's always a risk with things like that, and I really don't know guitars well...

Epiphone makes some fairly decent budget line guitars, but their QC is reputed to be a bit spotty, so (even more than usual) I'd advise playing the specific instrument you are interested in before buying it. They make a Les Paul design (and an SG as well, I believe), and their "Dot" guitar is a Gibson 335 clone. A guy that plays with me a lot has a Dot, and it's a pretty good guitar.

The less expensive Ibanez guitars are called "GIO"s or the GRX series, like this:

The Epiphone models that ggun mentioned are great deals too and are called the Special II (at least the Les Paul model is) like this:

as a bass player, I find guitars to sound puny and awkward when I play them. The only exception has been two strats, one a squire and one a MIM fender. Both can be had on the cheap used
