Best classic rock rhythm sections

Sign in to disble this ad
In case this hasn't come up before, who are among the very best drummer/bassist teams from the classic rock era?

I'm sure there will be plenty of votes for JPJ/Bonzo and Moon/Entwistle. And I wouldn't dispute it. But for my money, one of the very best - and probably under-rated at that - is Roger Taylor & John Deacon of Queen.

And that's mostly because, as solid and strong as Deacon's playing is, Roger Taylor is simply one of the best high-energy rock drummers ever. Just listen to the first three Queen albums. Taylor plays with all the energy & intensity of Keith Moon - but with precision, discipline and focus. Not to mention sensitivity to dynamics and all-around fine musicianship. He's simply superb.

Whatcha think?

Squire/Bruford's a good one, all right. And Cook/Clifford/Fogerty/Fogerty is one of the most unique and amazing teams. An entire band functioning as a rhythm section!

Totally agree on Bill Bruford & Chris Squire. Didn't mention it here because...I seem to always mention it...

+1 on Neil Peart & Geddy Lee too. Another ringer...

and a big +1 to the OP's choices, JPJ/Bonzo and Moon/Entwistle.

Edit: and let's include Hal Blaine and various session bassists, including Carol Kaye, on dozens of pop radio hits!

Boz Burrell and Simon Kirke - Bad Co.
Tom Hamilton and Tommy Kramer - Aerosmith
Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts - Stones
Jeffrey Hammond and Clive Bunker - Tull

MysticMichael, I agree with your praise of Queen. I just listened to Jazz today driving to Barstow and back, and John Deacon uses space as well as any bassist I've heard, and the notes he does play are always melodic, tasteful and supportive.

LOL! Of course it is! My wife was doing a crossword puzzle the other day, and the question arose, "NFL QB Kramer? Five letters?" I guess that got stuck in the ol' noggin.

Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox or Buddy Miles and Billy Cox but I like Mitch Mitchell's style a little better.
