Which best describes your relationship with Bass gear.

a. I buy backup gear for my backup gear just in case my main back up gear goes south or until I need a bigger place.

b. I use what I have until I trade for something that sounds better to me until I trade for something else that sounds better to me which leavs me wishing I still had the origional! Mr Gearcyclist

c. I have the Bass and Amp I was born with and they sound just fine thank you.

B definitely.

I don't have a ton of extra cash, but I do ok, so I'm in the process of upgrading my rig with the caveat that anything that is not the upgraded gear has to be sold. I also don't want a bunch of different sounding amps and such - I just want one big rig and one more modular smaller rig, because I like how my stuff sounds I just want to be able to pick and choose how loud I want to be and how much I want to carry.

Fortunately my all Aggie rig is real real close to being finished and then it will be multiple years before I will even think about changing anything.

D. I've upgraded from my beginner's gear, and still have that beginner's gear for back up. If there was something else that I needed, or even really really wanted, then I'd go buy it, but at this point I'm fine.

+1 definitely

I've only just got round to buying my "ultimate versatile dream bass", and the cheapo MIM Jazz and Dean Edge will serve me well in any backup situation. I only have one giggable amp rig, and the whole lot will do me fine for the foreseeable future.

E. I 'upgrade' every time something 'smaller/lighter/louder/better sounding' comes out. Here lately, that's about every 6 months!

C.

Bar a swap for a lighter/louder power amp I've been using the same bass and rig for 7 years now (70% of my bass playing life).

That would be me as well!!!

Well, not anymore. I don't things get much lighter than an Acoustic Image Focus!

D. I'm broke so the stuff I have will have to be good enough. Although it's plenty good in its own right.

None of the above. I research meticulously, plan and budget carefully in advance, then make strategic purchasing decisions of key components with a master plan in mind.

Of course, the master plan changes from time to time, but it's all good...

a mix of the three: i have my first bass and amp, have since upgraded to my main rig... so i guess my first bass and amp is a backup. i will keep on buying more "main" basses until i have one of each type: old fender jazz (which i have now... '74), fretless jazz (on layaway), amer. standard P (preferably old), rickenbacker 4003, 6str fretless (just for fun, mostly), jaguar bass (in black), mustang bass (short scale, sounds KILLER and HUGE)......................

but my first rig still sounds justfinethankyou, and though i've started using my upgraded rig as my main rig, i won't get rid of my first rig, and will keep collecting other basses which i think would fit my style nicely, and will hold on to all of it to be used in different scenarios 'til death do us part.

i love gear

I spend all my money on bass gear pretty much, its just my main hobby. (I play tenins too but that doesnt require too much gear, few racquets and shoes/bag).

I buy new gear and usually sell the gear that it replaced, both to make some money back and to make sure i dont have exessive unused stuff around. I dont have backup amps but I do have 2 main basses, in case.

You should make this thread have a poll.

None of the above.

I used to use an old GK 400RB with a old Hartke 410XL and an Avatar B212.

I bought a Bergantino IP310, and now I have no more desire for any other poweramp or cab. Tone-wise, it is THE ONE for me, and it has more than enough power for my needs.

If only my preamp situation could work out so well . . . I may well end up on the GAS rollercoaster on that front.

FWIW:

Not really any of the options.

Aside from basses and pickups, I’ve retained minimal gear. A combo for testing, and dinking, and a complete rig to play through with no backups except typically a DI. Pretty satisfied with my gear but never complacent, lots of stuff I haven’t checked out, always new stuff coming out, and different gear produces different tone for different styles. Satisfied enough to where I don’t get GAS. I do my research and keep a prioritized hit list.

I’m always looking to slim down more and improve tone, keeps me in the chain, improving, and playing fresh. Change is good.

When something I want comes up used in good condition for a break even price, I buy it. May take a week, may take 6 months. One piece at a time so one variable is altered. Plug it into the chain and compare it to what I’ve got, if it’s an improvement it stays and what I had goes and if it’s not it goes. If I ever sold a piece I wish I’d kept, I don’t remember what it was. An item or two I’d buy again if I had a particular need at the time for what it did.

Probably a good idea not to do a poll till you get some feedback and better idea of the categories players actually fit into. Good thread, don’t think it’s been done before.

i'm probably closer to that one, i trade up to the point where i'm happy with my gear...if i have the chance at some gear at a good price i'll take it, but otherwise i have my own tone that i am working on achieving and i will keep trading up until I get to where i want to be...and so far i have improved with every trade i get, with an exception to effects, i like trading them all the time, and the stuff i like, i keep, the stuff i don't, i put back in the loop

I'm what you would call a gear stalker. I lurk outside of stores and sneek peeks through the windows. Then, when the time is right, I go in and do what I have to.........buy stuff. I like the things I have but I always want more. It's a disease really, but I'm not sick...............weird.

B. Gearcyclist (without regrets though). But, I'm slowly getting to the point where I'm not willing to sell anything, so it might start towards "collecting". I don't gearcycle nearly as much as I used to.
