Best DVD to start collection of Rock Concerts is...?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I got this Amazon gift card as I am constantly buying music but I thought I'd maybe buy a concert DVD instead.
I don't own any and I'd like to get a few.
I am looking for some opinions on the best ones to get.
I am an old dude who grew up with The Who, Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis (with Pete & Steve), and even Fleetwood Mac or Cream or any of the Clapton bands or The Police, Heart The Pretenders or some Motown.
I guess it is mostly late sixties, seventies and some eighties stuff.
Where do I start?
Thanks!

The Last Waltz is a good one, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble live in Austin Tx, Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder Tour, Woodstock, Crosby, Stills & Nash - The Acoustic Concert, Lynyrd Skynyrd - Live from Austin, Anything from Santana. I think that's a good start.

You'd enjoy Rush's Exit... Stage Left DVD, from the early 1980s.

Black Sabbath 12-20-1970 Paris. Simple, plain, raw performance. A plain stage lit by a few white spotlights. They weren't BLACK SABBATH yet so it was before the hype, drugs and burnout. They were young, hungry, had a point to prove taking on the world. Arrangements of songs and lyrics are different on some songs.
Witness the birth of heavy metal. Heres a link to a clip.

Uhh, since when cant Black Sabbath be classic rock pray tell?
I didn't realize slapping the heavy metal label on someone made them less viable, less historically significant, or less enjoyable.

Standing In The Shadows Of Motown.
...a no-brainer and it's cheap!
http://www.amazon.com/Standing-Shado...3829985&sr=1-1

I noticed you also had The Police on your wishlist.
I did not like The Police: Certifiable- Live In Buenos Aires
I do, however, like Sting's Bring On The Night

The Last Waltz is just OK, IMO. I had heard so much great things about it so I finally bought it in 2010. I bought the Blue-Ray version from Amazon ...what I thought was a deal...and then I see it at BJ's for less money + the standard DVD was included.

Not sure if Zappa is your thing...Baby Snakes is nice.
A couple from Gov't Mule-
Rising Low
Deepest End w/ Bonus DVD
...although I see the price for this has skyrocketed-
http://www.amazon.com/Deepest-End-Bo...3830673&sr=1-6

Steely Dan's Two Against Nature DVD/concert is very nice.

Isle Of Wight is cool...Monterey Pop is cooler...Woodstock, eh.

There is a DVD series called Live In Montreux...not sure if any of these will float your boat (they are all good)-
Charles Mingus
Average White Band
Stuff
Weather Report (w/ a young Jaco)

Prince Live At The Alladin in Las Vegas is another favourite of mine.

Stole two of my best suggestions. I don't have anything from the Who, and I believe Cream Farewell is just for nostalgia. The 2005 show is much better. My first choice of many I do have was Metalica's S&M, and I would like to suggest Zappa plays Zappa, but you would probably have to be a fan of either.

What would you recommend from Santana? I really like the band that played on the 1st 3 albums...I have Woodstock (great, but too brief) & the Soul To Soul DVD (again, brief...3 tunes).
What else you got?

I haven't heard the Farewell DVD(I have read about the problems, though)...I do have the 2005 Reunion DVD & was not too thrilled.
I think it's the same reason I did not like The Police reunion thing in Buenos Aires.
There is a difference in hearing a band when they're young & hunger vs. when they're not.

More good stuff! I actually do have Standing In The Shadows. It is terrific but does not have nearly enough performance footage (for me). The interviews and personal stories are outstanding. I saw it on TV one night and rediscovered motown. A great DVD!

Well you said on your own post.."Witness the birth of heavy metal". did you not? And if you bothered to read the OP's opening post, I would guess he's not a Black Sabbath fan.
