I'd take an American Strat personally, or a Tele, but there are others who swear by other things. What else are you looking for in a guitar?
Your best bet is to either take that cash to Guitar Center and try everything there.

I used to have the Guild version of this guitar over a decade ago. The new one is from Brian May Guitars and is available in several different color combinations (I'm fond of the black and gold). The Burns Tri-Sonic pickups are marvellous (they remind me of P90s in brightness and fullness, but with a different character) and the switch options give you lots of tonal choices. You can get everything from a jazz sound to a rockabilly sound to a Beatles sound and more (and of course, with a treble booster and the right kind of valve amp, some Queen sounds can be yours, but it's not necessary to be a Queen fan to be able to get lots of useful tones out of the instrument). It's just a very versatile guitar. Hell, I used a double bass bow on my old Guild to get some good bowed jazzy cello sounds out of it, using the neck pickup and a clean amp setting.

This is such a vague question it's virtually unanswerable without something to build on. Besides, there is no "best" except by your definition.
Get back to us with some ideas, or you're only gonna get biased answers. |

If you're hell bent on a Les Paul for that kinda change, get the Epiphone deluxe (premier / elitist / whatever) series, and wind up with a much better guitar than the original. |

Telecaster would probably fit your needs, too. Schecter C-1 is a good model, but probably has too fat of a sound for alt. rock...
Anyway, go ahead and try all kinds of sticks in the stores!

The strat is one of the most versatile guitars out there. But because so many artists play them, much of what you do at first on one sounds like someone else.
