Not exactly what your looking for but an amazing DVD none the less. The language of music. Its a documentary on Tom Dowd. He recorded all the early jazz stuff through cream through some newer stuff. Unfortunately he passed away shortly after the DVD came out, but he was basically the most interesting engineer ive ever heard of. He lived a life that reads out like the history of music. Def worth a watch.

How about a "Piece of Rock History"? In that case, check out "Festival Express". That is, if you're into 1970 era rock as I am.

PBS had a long series (just called "Rock & Roll" I believe) that was 10 episodes or so. While something like this is never done perfectly (they omitted The Who which I thought was really odd) this one was really good. AFAIK it has never been made available commercially, though if it is, it's definitely worth a spin.

Time-Warner did a series called "The History of Rock & Roll" but IMO it wasn't nearly as good. However, I think it is available for purchase.
