Who do you feel has the best talk show band (past or present)??
I'm partial to David Lettermans original band lineup, even though they're more versatile now. |

| | | | I can't think of any that were/are less than killer, too tough for me to single out one. Maybe the original SNL band w/Paul Schafer? I don't know, tough call.

I couldn't stand Arsenio Hall's band but at least he had a damn good bass player. |

| | Squier Jazz Lovin' Geezer | | Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: Sussex, WI | | It's deep waters here, trying to pick the "best" out of the riches we have to pick from. Quite honestly, at this level, wouldn't YOU like to be the bottom in ANY of these bands?
With that said, the criteria I'm going to use as to picking "the best" is going to be which band do I want to hear more of? Which band could I sit and listen to for hours and still want more from? I may be lying, because this, too, could potentially be any of them, but I know without doubt that Doc's band had the stuff to carry that mission off.
In thinking about this I just pulled up "Jumpin' At The Woodside" when the band was a guest on Arsineo Hall's show. CRIPPEY! Talk about cooking, I got goose bumps! I hadn't heard that one before and it's KILLER! Want a lesson in what a walking bass line is? John (Jennifer) Leitham gives one here as well as any bass player you can name might. Any band Doc fronted was a cavalcade of stars, each a master and major talent. I could go on and on about how great they were, but here's the proof to save you the time of looking... Sing, Sing, Sing Sax Alley One O'Clock Jump & Bugle Rag
Understand that Paul Shaffer's bands never miss the mark. I love them. Will Lee is one of the best to ever pick up the instrument. If you haven't yet, be sure to read Paul's biography We'll Be Here For The Rest of Our Lives: A Swingin' Show-biz Saga. Great modern show biz history and great musical insider stories.
The Max Weinberg 7 was a GREAT band. Can't say enough good things about them. Max was the picture of refined drumming. Clean and tight, they should have had a half hour every show.
Just as much good could be said about all the rest, but Doc will always be the one who rules the roost for me.

This +10000
Lettermans "Worlds most dangerous band" iteration was very good too.
Because I knew the bass player, I was partial to Pat Sajacks band Tre is a fantastic bass player who made the Vespers a killer band here in Sac. |
