best Penguin Jazz Guide?

I've been considering ordering one of Cook and Morton's Penguin Jazz Guides, but I'm not sure whether I should get the 2008 edition (something like 14000 entries, indexed, alphabetical order, last year to be called The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings) or the 2010 edition (the 1001 supposedly "best" albums, chronological order, called The Penguin Jazz Guide). I'm not sure whether I should go for the highest volume of content (I do like to read, and I regularly go to a few record stores that have some really obscure stuff), or if the chronological ordering would offer an interesting enough historical perspective to justify the lost content. Are the reviews more in-depth in the 2010 edition, or is it the same level of analysis for the best stuff as the 2008 ed with more obscure records cut out? (I generally prefer depth to breadth, but if the 2008 ed has both I'll go with that).
Due to the wonders of the internet I can find either book for about the same price, so that isn't an issue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
