Best Place to Get a Bass on Credit?

Sign in to disble this ad
So the story goes...I was playing bass a lot in town. Then moved city's three hours away to take a better job. Had no place to play. Sold my bass and bought down to a MIM Fender Jazz Bass to practice on around the house.

Now a year and a half later I have more than enough places to play with no cash on hand for another upgrade.

Any suggestions on who has a good rate of approving credit for musicians or any pointers of anyone being the same situation?

I would just do the gigs with your MIM until you save enough $$ to buy something. No need to go into debt, your current bass should be up to the task.

+1 ditto. If you are working you can afford to do it cash.

As someone who currently has no credit card or other charge account debt, I have to agree with the previous two posts. Don't go in to debt for a bass. Use what you have until you save up some cash from gigs to fund another bass.

^^^Yup. Basic MIM Fender should do for just about any gig. If you're going to worry about credit, go in hock for a decent amp. The Fender should do 'ya just fine for a basic bass, that does just about everything well.

What he said-If you have some cash look into a setup by a good repairman if you need it. Put some new strings and a set up on it and it'll play like a brand new bass. Then save back the money for the upgrade....

Me either. Of course, it's gonna take me years to pay off the ones I have...

Very sound financial advise from your fellow talkbass amigos...set aside a few bucks from each gig until you can afford to pay CASH for the bass you want. In the meantime, get it professionally set up and it will play like a dream. My MIM jazz bass sound as good if not better than the MIA jazz bass. No debt no sweat.....

Add me to the chorus. I strongly suggest waiting until you can truly afford another bass. I don't mean just having the cash on hand at that moment, but being able to buy it without betting on the best possible personal financial situation for the foreseeable future.

It kills me to see a bunch of 1-3 month-old basses get sold here at big losses because people thought maybe a hundred bucks was a sufficient emergency fund.

If it's any help, I'm confident your MIM P can sound as good as any other Fender if it's set up well. My 2000 MIM Jazz sounds every bit as good as my '63 P...just a bit different. Your MIM P is plenty good to work with.

Why buy on credit, you'll have hardly any wiggle room on price, especially if the retailer is the one extending you the credit...Cash, on the other hand, will buy you alot of negotiating room.

I'd be looking at a good amp before I'd get another bass, bro

If your MIM plays fine already, just slap some new p-up's in there and you just turned a good bass into a great one for about $100 or so. I tend to be an active bass kinda guy myself, but you can do some serious damage in any genre with a MIM J-bass and a decent amp.

Especially in times like these, say no to credit. If you miss one scheduled payment, your interest can exceed 30%. You can become SWAMPED in interest debt in a matter of months/weeks/however your plan will work, and all the while you have a perfectly serviceable bass waiting to be gigged
