Best practice headphones for around $150?

Sign in to disble this ad
As much as I dread having to shop for headphones again, the time has come for me to replace my dying Sony NC60s, and an upgrade would certainly be nice. I'm a pretty committed audiophile, so I'm hunting for the best around-the-ear headphones that I can not only use for bass practice, but for anytime music listening. I'm looking for a set of headphones that go for about $150-$200... I've had experience using Sony MDR-700s, which are quite nice for using as monitors, but they're a bit fragile. Are there any higher-quality headphones for around that same price? What would the TalkBass community recommend?

I haven't used many in my lifetime but I bit the bullet and bought a pair of AKG K240 Studios for about $120 (I saw someone blowing them out for 89.99... mighta been Washington Music Center). I'm currently ampless and use the headphones with my Pod X3L and It's absolutely amazing how good these headphones sound. They also sound killer for just casual listening. It made me a little sad to find out theres a slight bass boost on the headphones but I've learned to adjust around it

I've heard a lot of good things about Sennheiser stuff. I likes the look of the HD 25-1 IIs. It's worth mentioning that I am a rather large-headed person... do those puppies expand much? They look like they're on-ears, which is fine, but I'm kind of used to the ones that cup around the ears. Can you tell me much about some of the other headphones Sennheiser produces, like the HD448, and how the HD 25-1s compare? Thanks, by the way, for the advice.

I have used these Sennheisers (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...nes?sku=242411) at work (running sound) for a while and really enjoy them. Very consistent and full sound, stand up to wear well.

I also have used these AKGs (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...nes?sku=241833) very often in my office, but they are $199.

Sony MDR-V600, MDR-V6 or MDR-7506. The 600 models have slightly larger ear cups and are the most comfortable to me. They fit over/around the ear, not ON the ear, which gets uncomfortable. Since they fit around the ear, they also provide acoustic isolation.

I've used all three of these Sony models for professional audio production and field video/audio for 20+ years. They are great phones and none of them cost over $100. They also fold up nicely and are easy to transport.
