If you're going to mention all of those guys, you have to mention Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. Because they were the ones that showed everyone else, how it's done.

I think Levon Helm/Rick Danko managed to find the perfect balance being being supportive, but also lending their own special flavor to songs to make good songs great, and great songs incredible.

Also Bruce Foxton/Rick Buckler are probably the two most underratted musicians of the past 20 years. Admittedly, The Jam was largely Paul Weller's vehicle, but they were the ones that made Weller's templates into great songs.

My vote goes to Bonham/Jones.

FWIW- Peter Green thought so much of his rhythm section in the Bluesbreakers he named his new band after them, even though one of them wasn't even in the new band (yet). Mick Fleetwood and John McVie.

Not really Rock, but I've gotta go with Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton backing Stevie. Highly underrated IMO.

Rock I'd have to go with Neil and Geddy, because of the synergystic arrangements they did / do.

Honorable mention Jones and Bonham, though I'm not as up on my Zeppelin as maybe I should be.

I beg to differ- Levin and Bruford. The new Levin and Mastelotto will probably be very interesting too.

Another fan of Levin and Bruford here, and Squire and Bruford for that matter. But hey, I also like Cox and Miles better than Redding/Mitchell. I'd say all time it's between Geddy/Peart and Bonham & JPJ...

Fishman and Gordon anybody?
Waters & Mason?

Neil and Geddy of course. Sting makes everyone sound good - but I really like him when he was playing with Vinnie Caliuta (sp?).

Agree...I also like Cox/Mitchell; Miles is better at the backbeat Rock-Funk stuff.
Mitchell & Moon are "similar" in that they don't play backbeat, per se.

Others-
David Brown/Michael Shrieve(Santana)
Jimmy Fielder/Bobby Colomby(Blood, Sweat, & Tears)
Phil Chen/Richard Bailey(Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow)
Chuck Rainey/Bernard Purdie(Steely Dan)

Current others-
Jimmy Haslip/Vinnie Colaiuta(Jing-Chi...they sound like Cream on steroids)
Stephan Lessard/Carter Beauford(DMB)

The Zeppelin DVDs would get you up-to-date. Bonham is like a freight train(Jerry B's words...& I agree!).

I never really thought of them as having a tight rhythm section.

I used to really dig Mitch Mitchell until I heard the Rock and Roll Circus "Dirty Mac" project. He was cool, but not as powerful as the rest of the band. Surprising, seeing as what his real gig was!
