Best strap to use

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Gang,

I currently use a Moody strap whichI like............but I need to ask the bass playing community.........what is the best bass strap you use/ recommend?

I am currently having shoulder issues.........and it seems the Moody just figs into the injured part of my shoulder. I'm a big guy, 6'3" and need something that goes to at least 54"-57" long.

I've use Comfort strap. Neos',, etc.....

And suggestions?

Thanks!

I also have a shoulder issue. I had surgery in April and I am still having problems with it so I can sympathize with you.

This is going to seem like a cop out but my suggestion would be to bring your bass to a store and explain your situation. Ask to try different straps and see what feels best. It really comes down to personal preference.

Okay, someone has to say it... there's no such thing as "best" strap.

Now that's out of the way, I've used Moody straps for years. I've tried all sorts of others, but for me and how my body is shaped, Moody straps just feel good. FWIW, I've tried the 4" Moody straps and they just don't work for me. The 2.5" straps fit me way better. What size strap do you use? Maybe a different width would help.

Mine is the 3.5" or 4".......can't remember off-hand. I love the Moody as well.........but I wish there was a sheepskin pad sewed in the shoulder part.

I really like the straps Steven 'Scoop' Reece has made for me over the past 10-12 years. Custom made, beautiful, sheepskin shoulder padding and affordable considering each one is hand made to your specs. He's in Fernandina Beach, Fl. Whatever nicely made soft leather 3 inch or wider strap. I dont like the stiff leather ones or ones with shiny coating on them, Neither is as comfortable as just nice soft bare leather ones to me. I currently have Fort Bryan and Clayton leather straps.

I'm surprised more people don't use double straps - one with a strap for each shoulder. It distributes the weight evenly, not just across your shoulders, but really across your whole upper body. I bought a simple POS one on Amazon for about $15, and it's been my most comfortable strap yet. If you found a really nice one, it would trump any single shoulder strap IMO.

Maybe people are concerned about how they'll look? I'd value my shoulder over my looks, personally.

I use diMarzio cliplocks. I have the 2" wide and the 3" wide. I usually use the 2" though. It's made like a seatbelt. Some people like it, some don't, but it really works for me. Oh yeah, and the black ones make your bass sound better. just sayin'

I've used the Mono strap ever since I went from a lightweight Ibanez to a heavier Stingray. It's worked really well for me and not too expensive.

I've always used the skinny, nylon straps, until recently, that is. Now I'm using a simple, 3" leather strap (black, of course, to go with my black P-bass). I've seen the double strap -- looks like it would be hard to adjust, but I guess once you got it dialed in, you'd be okay.

I've also seen a bassist around here who uses what looks to me like a double strap setup where one goes over his shoulder as usual and another is on his HIP. Haven't gotten a close-up look. Didn't notice it when he was playing, only when he took the bass off. I also noticed an extra strap button on the bass and I think the hip-strap stayed on him when he took the bass off.

Anyone have a better idea/specific example of what I'm talking about? The idea looks to be akin to backpacking, where you want the hips to take some of the weight.

I recently purchased this from Minotaur: Minotaur Online Store

The 'folds' of leather feels pretty plush so far, with allowance for minor side to side movements allowing somewhat better contouring while playing. Only had it for a fortnight though, so this could be a strap honey moon period. It does seem to distribute slightly more evenly than the mono betty gs-1 I have.
