Best SX Guitar for the Price?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been considering getting an sx electric guitar for awhile, or one of similar quality and price, but I'm not really sure what would be the best choice.

What's your preference?

I'm not in any hurry to make a decision as I can always play my dad's electric when I want to play guitar, but by the time I head off to college (2.5 years) I'll want to have already purchased one.

Right now, my ideal guitar that would be a semi-hollow telecaster (G&L or fender) with a natural finish, nothing that fancy since bass is still my love. However, both of those options are still more than I would want to spend on a guitar right now, and for a while.

I've heard that the SX Tele's are good for the price. Next step up would be the Agile AL-2000. I had an Agile AL-3000 for a while and it was a great guitar. Very close to a Gibson in quality.

I haven't played any of the Fender style SX models, but I have a friend who ordered a http://www.rondomusic.com/ngg1bobkft.html

Once we got it setup, it was a stellar guitar. It definitely felt and sounded better than guitars that I've spent way more money on.

I really like my SX Tele. Looks great, sounds like a Tele, and plays well for the price.

Those were nice before they changed the headstock. I'd almost lean towards a Douglas before I'd buy one of those. But that's me. The Douglas Hawker is a decent guitar, as is the WT-445, which is basically a 3 pickup version.

For what I use it for, I love my AL-2000. I got one on scratch & dent. It has a gash on the back near where your right arm goes. Not bad, but it saved me $30-40.

My recommendation is to wait until they offer a guitar with the features you want, at a price you're willing to pay. For me, I knew that I wanted a Les Paul copy with mahogany body, set neck, trapezoid inlays, and I didn't want to pay over $200. Essentially, I wanted the classic LP features for less than $200. I waited...and then got it.

I had a guitar player buddy check it out. He works for a shop that sells Gibson & Epiphone, and said that it compares very favorably to the Epiphone line. I like it. The feel is great, the sound is good enough, and the price was right.

I would not hesitate to buy another Agile instrument. The only instrument that I have bought from them that I wasn't totally thrilled with were 2 SX basses. I bought fretted & fretless Jazz 5s. I gave them away-kept them too long to return (and modified them). They weren't bad, but I hated the necks. Fit, finish, playability were fine. Sound was pretty good-100% Jazz Bass Tone. I just didn't like the necks enough to keep. So, my sister's middle school jazz program now has an SX Jazz 5 fretted, and one of my friends now has a SX Jazz 5 Fretless as his first bass.

For what its worth I have an AL-3100 wide neck and its absolutely badass. I didn't even have to set it up when it arrived and it sounds fantastic. I also like the wide neck a lot more as it makes transitioning to guitar a little easier because I have fat fingers.

I would not hesitate to buy pretty much anything that is from the Agile line. However, from what people seem to say some of their lower end models just need new wiring/tuners/bridge/pups and those sound great too.

I got the first one, the STL50. The stock pickups are pretty darn good and the only flaws are cosmetic. The neck wasn't cut properly where it meets the body and it has a small bulge at the end, with the pickguard cut to fit. (It doesn't look as bad as it sounds in writing though). The finish had a few sticky spots which seem to be fairly common, but they rub right off.

Other than that, it's a well put together guitar, especially for the price. I just wanted a guitar to mess around with on occasion and it gives me exactly that.
