Best way to record metal vocals

G'day all!

Just shooting a question to anyone whose ever recorded metal 'roar' vocals or knows some tricks on how to get them sounding pristine!

What are some helpful tips you may have on getting roar style vocals to sound awesome and brutal, yet still retaining some clarity?

Cheers fellas!

Use a really good mic. Record in an acoustically deadened booth. Have the singer about six to eight inches away from the pop-shield when he "delivers".

The rest is good production. Most metal vocals I've heard on demos sound like gash because they're way too loud in the mix and haven't been EQ'd properly. In good mixes metal vocals have their presence scooped out and sit back in the mix between the guitars and the bass.

Thanks Max, some really good advice there, we have some very good mics to play around with, but I had not known about the metal vocals 'sitting back' in the mix, I shall have to discuss it with our producer! Cheers!

When the vocals don't "sit in the mix", some compression usually helps. With digital recording you might have to track with some compression as well.
