best way to tune

Sign in to disble this ad
ok guys, this may be a somewhat beginner/rudimentary question, but when reading off a tuner when tuning, what's the best way to get all of your strings in tune without having to get retuned? I tune E-G and then i find that my G and D strings are good, but the A and E strings are a little off...most of the time I end up tuning those lower strings UP to get in line with everything else. when I'm tuning off a tuner korg ca 30 440 (plugged into it) I see most of the time that my E and A strings are sharp when they register on the tuner, so I tune down a tad, but when actually playing I have to tune those back up by ear! any help you guys can offer?

You probably got used to hearing a sharper E and A, or your tuner is busted.

Next time, tune your D and G strings, and play the octave E on the E string with the E on the D string (should be the same note) and compare which one is off.

Same with the octave A and the A on the G string.

Next, do the same thing but having tuned with the tuner before hand. See what's going on that way. If the notes play in unison, then your ears are messed up and the tuner is correct.

I'd actually suggest tuning from middle out so that tension on the neck is more or less even.
