I don't know about you all but 'lead guitar' just doesn't cut it for me. You can play lead on a bass guitar. I wish that there was a good prefix for what most people consider to be the guitar. Baritone guitar is taken and so is tenor guitar, alto, and soprano. Maybe contra-tenor guitar. But, I don't know what is lower, the tenor guitar or the "normal" guitar. By the way, a tenor guitar is a four-string guitar that is designed for banjo players who want a guitar sound.
Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas? |

Never liked the sound of the name Lead Bass though. Even with how conceited I pretend to be, that name doesn't give me a feeling of power because it just doesn't flow.
How about...God Bass?

I just want to know what you guys think. There is nothing wrong with just calling it a guitar, but there have been situations where I wished that there was a good prefix for it. |

How about...God Bass? | cant you only call something lead if there is another of the same playing rhythm? i never understood that terminology... if there is only one guitar in a band you never hear them say "he's our lead guitar" cause there's no rhythm guitar behind him. so calling les claypool a lead bass is kind of off because there is no rythm bass (yes i know you can say every bass is the rhythm). he just a bass player that stands out more than a regular bass player i guess. no means to offend here just saying.. |

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas? | "Lead" refers to the role, i.e. lead guitar versus rhythm guitar, not lead guitar versus bass guitar. If there's only one guitar, then it's just guitar, it's not lead anything. When the lone guitar player uses his guitar to play "lead breaks," and you could say that when he's doing that, he's playing "lead guitar," but it's kinda axoimatic to call it lead guitar in that case, it's still just guitar. Do we call the flute in Jethro Tull "lead flute" or the sax in Van Morrison "lead sax?"
