Wow, thanks to all TB'ers who go on about Pino Palladino.
Firstly I'll admit being a little niave about the guy, yes I've heard a lot of his work but never realised who was playing, the main reason being that most of his work is not what I would normally listen to (the fretless earlier stuff anyway), but as he now plays with The Who (Entwhistle was a hero) and the fact that nearly everyone on here seems to love him I thought I really ought to check him out.
I picked up a Hohner arbor series fretless p-bass 6 or 7 years ago for 35 pounds, it was virtually untouched as the owner bought it on a whim just as I did after him and so it never really got played, I've just dug it out of it's case and dusted off some old pop collection type of LP's from the eighties when I was a kid. Being the ska punk and rock type I never imagined sitting here playing along to Paul Young but 'Wherever I lay my hat' had the bass that I suddenly remembered as being Pino. I'm sure my wife's enjoying listening to the same song over and over as much as I am trying to nail that song

.
I don't know what strings are on the fretless but I do know they are old (probably the original ones) and I am only playing it unplugged as my amps are down the rehersal room (I use an acoustic at home) but it still sounds amazing. I might have to make a special trip to pick up an amp and effects tomorrow, am I right in thinking Pino uses an octaver on that song?
Anyway I'm going on a bit so I'll stop but thanks again for injecting a new sound into me, damn ruts you get stuck in
