I would have guessed that it's a synth playing the bass line, but according to this article it's Louis Johnson on a Yamaha bass. http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?ID=1777 "Bassist Louis Johnson ran through his part on every guitar he owned before Jackson settled on a Yamaha bass with an ideally thick and buzzing sound."

And I cite the Poll/Thread started by our friend Burk48237 as evidence of why I feel this way; BEST "POP" BASS LINES
The minute you said, "Billy Jean" and "bassline", I instantly could hear the bassline in my head ( ||:bim bum bum bum bim bum bum bum :|| ) - so it is definitely a very memorable line - however, as Burk's thread demonstrates, there are SO MANY other lines that shine, your statement, Quote: |

On the other hand, there's definitely a human-played bass on the bridge (the "People always told me, be careful what you do...." sections).

Back on topic, the most popular 'bassline' when I was starting out was actually the g****r part to Deep Purple's Smoke on the water: DUNT DUNT DUNNN DUNT DUNT DU-DUNNN
DUNT DUNT DUNN DUNT-DUNNN.
On bass.

It's up there with Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" for most over-requested guitar riffs and bass lines.

Other than that it was "Another One Bites the Dust", "Good Times" by Chic, "Money" by Pink Floyd, and "Boogie Oogie Oogie" by Taste of Honey.

Money REALLY amazes me sometimes. It's NOT hard, but I've heard alot more wrong versions than right! |
