This thread is not about religion but a history of blues and muslim slaves. And it's connection.

Interesting read... I'll have to give the Muslim call to prayer and Levee Camp Holler a listen. Thanks for posting this!

Thumbs up

Fantastic article. Really enhanced my perspective on blues. I always have known about the obvious connection between blues and black enslavement in the US, but I don't think I have ever read anything that delves into the days before Africans were brought here and their inherent religious beliefs. All you ever hear about is how they were forced to convert once they arrived.
A very eye opening piece, thanks for posting.

Interesting article. I'd like to think that music could unite us all. I especially like the description of the "knife to the strings" origin of the slide. I need to listen to more Arabic music, but I can see the connection between the blues voice and Muslim voice in terms of vocals.

It is an interesting article, but strikes me more as propaganda than solid history. Perhaps there was some connection, but I'd have to see more solid scholarly verification to believe there is anything other than a negligible connection. Just my opinion.

Dr. Sylviane Diouf is a leading scholar in her field. Her work on Muslim slave history in America is virtually without equal. If you want scholarly work on the subject, read one of her many books, especially Servants of Allah.

To state that this is "propaganda" is, frankly, insulting, because I may be wrong, but I honestly don't think anyone would say the same thing if the article was about the connection between Christian church music and blues.

Perhaps you should read again. Or at least read all of it.

There is nothing resembling propaganda in this article. The article even concedes that it's hard to verify things historically. All it does (among other things) is point out in a very enlightening way the connections between the religious beliefs of some of the Africans that were enslaved here and some of the musical traditions that evolved from them being here.

Aw. Are someone's Christian sensibilities offended?

Such a shame that even the most benign statements by a reputable scholar are dismissed as propaganda because it's not about about how all Muslims are freedom hating savages.

I agree with you 100%. This is pure nonsense.

Such an unwarranted vociferous and emotional response to my opinion belies a factual commitment and reveals an ideological one.

It's not unwarranted, you don't explain your position. Join the conversation.
