Blues Standards--Please help with a song list

Sign in to disble this ad
As I posted in a previous thread, I am thinking about jumping back into playing with a band. The Blues thing is happening around here and I've decided this is probably the direction I want to go. There are a number of open jams around town that I'm going to start attending and eventually participate in as a way into the local scene.

So far, my practice time has been rather scattershot--a little of this, a little of that, hey, this is fun, etc.... Now I need to focus on some definite goals.

What I'd like help with, is developing a list of Blues standards that are likely to be called out. I know that there are probably hundreds, but I have to start somewhere.
Throw a few in the hat.

Thanks a lot!

Yeah, I've been working on some of the SRV and Allman Bros. stuff, as well as some of the more rock oriented Johnny Winter (from Still Alive and Well) and A Big Man, by John Mayall.

I'm thinking that I should look at some of the compilation CD's that are available to see if I can get a number of the traditional tunes in one package.

Keep 'em comin'.

Great! Thanks for the lists. I'll print them out and head for the used CD stores (and library) tomorrow.

I had no idea that I was still this much of a blues geek. I was reading these lists and actually exclaiming (loudly) things like "Spoonful! How did I forget that one? Mannish Boy! Oh my God!" I am sure my wife thinks I've lost it.

But definite corroborative votes for:

Spoonful
Mannish Boy
Further On Up the Road
St James Infirmary
Key to the Highway
Hoochie Coochie Man
Who Do You Love?

and one I have only heard from Lynnyrd Skynnyrd, so I don't know who did it originally...'Ain't No Good Life'

I haven't seen this yet...

You gotta know the Killin' Floor riff if you're gonna be in a Blues band...

I have the Albert King version (from Years Gone By).
Do you have a particular version in mind?

I just posted about Killin' Floor because there are many songs that use the "Killin' Floor Riff", even though they are not actually Killin' Floor. I think Howlin' Wolf's version would be the best example of the song, since he wrote it.
