While I own a bunch of "real" guitar amps (including Marshall, Fender, Ampeg, Peavey and Bugera tube amps and a couple really good sounding solid-state amps), my Tech21 PSA1.1 based hybrid rig gets the widest variety of tones.

The rig consists of:

Tech 21 PSA 1.1 preamp
Alesis MicroVerb (for reverb)
MarkBass LittleMark III head for on-the-fly EQ correction and power
Avatar G212 Vintage loaded with a Celestion G12M-70 and a Carvin/Eminence Vintage 30 clone.

In the past, I've also used a Behringer V-Amp 2 modeler with my bass rig. I've had very pleasant results with that too and they're cheap!

For that sort of money, I'd go for either a Vox VT40, or an Orange Crush CR35ldx - both are better than the Fender Mustangs IMHO. Are sure that Gibson is really a Gibson? That's seriously cheap for any Les Paul; you scored a bargain for sure. LP Studios sound just as good as the Standards. The differences are purely cosmetic (though don't say that on a guitar forum!!).

That's exactly why I chose to post my question in the comfort of my TalkBass community. I know I'm gonna get fair information, without any over-hype.

I know that was a good deal. I wasn't planning on it but when I saw the price, I jumped on it right away. It's supposed to arrive sometime Friday/Saturday, maybe early next week at the latest.

Gibson LP is nice.
What kind of music are you in to?

If you are in to metal, Peavey 6505+ 60 watt combo is used at $479.

Jet City 20 watt tube combo is new at $450.

Got mine B-stock on eBay for way less than retail, and I honestly believe they sent me an A-stock, mint condition one.

Ok, I decided to go with the Marshall Microstack for $339 (new). Order placed today with Quest Music Store:

http://www.questmusicstore.com/p-126...-amp-cabs.aspx

I know there are some negative reviews out there concerning the speakers, but I'm sure I can work/tweak with it. If anything, I could just pick up 2 Celestions & change them.

Ear protection is optional, although highly recommended!
That's what I was going to say, although you don't need the full stack.

1/2 stack, and you will still need the ear protection.

Technically, the Microstack is 1/4 of this. I will have 2 speakers versus 8 speakers in a regular sized stack.

Wow, gear is cheap in North America. You wouldn't buy one of those here (Australia) for that sort of money. A Les Paul and Marshall stack - have fun!!

The music shop called me today. Apparently, the Marshall Mikrostack is discontinued. Instead, they offered, and I accepted an Orange Mikro Terror head with 2 small speaker cabinets. I will still own a mini-stack, but from Orange. Has anyone tried this setup before?

Plus 2 of these

Really? It's still shown on Marshall's website and you can order one from the Carbon Fiber series through Musician's Friend (ship date in January).

I don't know. I'm gonna give the Orange setup a chance. I suppose if I don't like it, I could send it back.

Anyway, I read a lot more negative reviews on the Marshall Mikrostack following my purchase post earlier. I had become convinced that I would need to upgrade the speakers when it arrived.

I agree with the Marshall Class 5 for your price range - nice little amp and just right for what you plan on using it for. And congrats on the LP - I have a LP Standard coming for Christmas myself, so pretty excited about it.

Enjoy!

I wasn't suggesting that at all. The Micro Terror stack looks so very, very cool and from the YouTube video I watched it sounds great too!

My amp arrived today, so I thought I'd share some pics. First, the LP Studio, with a very nice Fireburst finish. I was actually blown away by this Orange Micro Terror full stack. It is tiny, but LOUD!! It has a rockin' crunch and a warm clean tone. The two 8" cabinets stacked ontop of each other are just level with my knee. You can see its height compared to the LP in the 3rd pic. The controls of the Micro Terror unit couldn't be simpler. A knob for Volume, Tone, and Gain. There's a 1/4" headphone jack if you need to practice quietly. The Micro Terror head, according to reviews is actually powerful enough to run a 4-Speaker cabinet. (It's rated for 4 Ohms.)

I have a Blackstar HT1-R on order. 1 watt tube amp. It's in the garage in the shipping box and I have to wait until Christmas...

If you like the Marshall sound but are on a budget the Blackstar line is the way to go. My Les Pauls just scream thru the HT-20 cab and 4x12 half stack I use. My single coil strats still like the Fender rigs best but nothing can match a Les Paul humbucker thru a Marshall type rig.
