Bringing a new bass back from the USA....

I can almost hear your collective groans of 'oh no not that again!' so i apologise and i'll try to keep this concise.
I'm thinking of buying a Gretsch Electrotone while i'm in New York in May and am considering biting the bullet and bringing it back to the UK with me but i'd like to know the following if possible
1) what are the penalties if i get stopped at customs? Can they confiscate the bass? (i already know to post my receipts etc home and remove all tags...) bearing in mind that the Electrotone comes with a case.
2) My alternatives are possibly getting the store to ship it - but this could be pricey - or what? Post it myself?
Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated.
