I always heard Buddy was a total douche, but I don't know. His hi-hat technique was to die for!

Yhea I heard the same thing about him. I remember back in the 70's I use to watch this talk show where he was a guest quite abit....It was either the Mike Douglas show or the Merv Griffin show...he always seemed to wear this Elvis type shirt with the hairy chest and huge Medallion around his neck and would not only play drums but would do karate too. During Pearts drum solo they showed vid of Buddy on the jumbotron. |

On a side note, my birthday's the same day Buddy Rich died. |

For you Buddy fans, try to hunt down that old famous tape (that's how old it is, it was a tape!) of Buddy just screaming at his band on the bus. It is just classic (I'll stop this bus right now and you can walk back to LA... one more clam and your'e all fired... AND LOSE THE BEARD!).
Edit: Holy cow, I did a search, and it came up on youtube. I don't think I should post the link, since Buddy is cussing like a sailer. But it's really worth a listen. Buddy at his nasty, ugly finest!

I mean, I have drummer friends playing more interesting solos than that, and that are on at least the same level technically. (They're pros obviously, just not world famous ones).
I've heard very little of Buddy Rich, but the few songs I've heard has featured some nice drumming. It's just this solo that didn't move me in any way.

| No shame - talent does not always belong to people you'd want to hang out with.

what does the number of drums have to do with any thing? I love neil and Rush but I am more impressed by a drummer that can get a loud loise out of a 5 piece kit then I am with double bass roto toms and what ever else!!!! |

that is what is known as hidden talent...my brother plays guitar comparable to jimmy page but nobody will ever know that. |

Buddy was so far ahead of anyone else that it's highly improbable we'll see anybody like him for a long, long time, or perhaps ever. Nobody else has come anywhere near close. And that's from someone who likes, respects and envies the talent of LOTS of great drummers.
