building a rehearsal space?

Sign in to disble this ad
my band recently got kicked out of our rehearsal room, and now we need a room with 24/7 access where we can play. im considering building a room in our backyard (guitarist and myself are brothers, live at home together.) i have built sheds before, and the drummer has lots of experience with this sort of thing, but exactly how plausable is the idea? how would i go about sound proofing it enough so that at 3 am nobody will hear us from the neighbors house?

i was thinking of basically building a big shed with multiple layers of walls to keep the sound from going too far.

ideas? comments? alternate options? all help appreciated.

Depends on the type of music you're playing.

A lot of sound proofing, and concrete in the walls and under the floor would go a long way to deaden things.

No matter what you do... people are going to b***h at 3am.

the music were playing wont be so horrendously loud, but you know, still acoustic drums and all. its a psychedelic funk rock sort of thing, but my practice amp is a 1x12"..

ive seen recording studios sound proofed to the point where if you stood 3 feet from the door you diddnt hear a thing, but when you opened the door it was like you were standing outside a bar with a live band.. i dont intend to go exactly that far, but i dont want it to be heard from say 20-30 feet away..

i need to see exactly how much room i have available to work with and then start mapping out my ideas.

You can build it and probably do a reasonable job of sound proofing. It will be a LOT of work.
Just keep in mind the roof and the floor. We all think about the walls, but always forget the roof and floor.
Running electricity will also require some thought.

Good luck.

Sounds like fun! If I were nearby I'd offer you some help. I like building things.

were lucky enough to have an electrician living here, too.

were expecting a lot of work if we choose to do this, but were still looking for alternatives.

ive been thinking maybe we can try rigging up the basement as a "headphone jam room" as in, electronic drums, everything into a headphone amp so we can all jam and only we hear it. only problem is, drummer doesent have an electric kit, and the guitarist doesent use pedals for dirt (always uses the amp itself, so running his sound into a headphone amp wont be easy.)

im still not sure what to do, but the bottom line is we need somewhere where we can play late. we often have lots of work to do, and are only all available in the late night hours..
