buying a guitar amp...

Sign in to disble this ad
im playing guitar in a 3 peice rock band. i KNOW i want the fender tube sound but i don't know if I should go with a combo or a half stack. i could either get a bassman 100 head and a cheaper 4x12 cab or i could just hot the hot rod deville 4x10 combo. i know the combo will have the volume but im worried because of its compact sized, it won't have enough air push to it. the bassist is using a 2x15 cab with a hartke head..

I think the 2x12 Deville it's one of the best amps Fender has made. Plus, if you want more volume, you can always get an extension cab.

a 40 watt example is plenty loud enough with a 2x12/2x10/4x10/4x12 configuration. while the bassman 100 into a decently equipped (meaning speakers, not wood) 4x12 should sound great in and of itself, it would be beaming and not fit a mix well without a lot of effort from everyone.

a semi open back 2x12 with a bassman 50 will prove itself more than sufficient. the hot rod deluxe with an extension cab would be great too.

I would get the better head and a cheaper cab, if you plug in a good head to some cheaper Marshalls you should be good

Get the DeVille and if it isn't loud enough, get an extension cab. That's the smart way to go.

When I was at school the guitarist in the jazz band used a Fender Deville (I think 60watt 212). It sounded incredible and got LOUD.

I own a Fender Blues DeVille Reissue

Its 60 watts with 4 AlNiCo Blue 10's. It gets plenty loud and will keep up with the Hartke, no problem. You can add an 8-ohm speaker cab to it as well. I played bass through mine with a Fender Bassman Pro SL 4x10 cab. Its a monster and sounds great!

I have been looking at the 4x10 and 2x12 devilles have I haven't found that they have an extension cab jack.. I have seen the 1x12 version with the exension jack but not the bigger ones. Do they all have that or is it just the smallest one??

They have an extension speaker jack in the back opening of the cabinet next to where the internal speaker plug is (under the amp chasis). Check out the Fender.com website and look at the online manual. It shows where the ext. speaker jack is.

The leader/part-time guitarist of one of my bands plays through a Hot Rod Deville 4x10; that thing is plenty loud. We've been, at times, a 6-7 piece rock band with a 2-3 piece horn section, and he's usually the one we have to tell to turn down. If he ever starts talking about an extension cab, we might just have to crush Ziggy's sweet hands...

The combo is PLENTY! If for some odd reason you need more stage volume, just mike it and get it in the PA monitors.

I was going to suggest the same amp. A guitarist in my first band had one. Such a great combo.

I'm happy with the Fender models on my Vox AD50VT for now, but someday I'd like to own a real fender tube combo...

1 of our guitar players just purchased a Mesa Triple Rectifier head with 4x12 Mesa rectifier cab. The head is 150 watts all tube. He has it at 7-8 o clock at practice and the thing stupid loud. Its definitely more amp than he needs, but its cool as hell

As other folks have said, the Blues DeVille is a great amp. Its also ear-bleadingly loud when turned up, so don't worry about the volume.

Also, if you're looking for something a bit more versatile on the distortion side, I'm a big fan of the Peavey Classic 30 1x12 combos. And at least the Guitar Centers here in Austin have their in stock Classic 30s on clearance for $400. Great deal if you can get past the Peavey logo.

Those Peavey's sound great in just about any configuration. A bigger shocker is the Crate V-series - awesome sounding amps, really. But I wouldn't classify either of them as Fender sounding, not vintage Fender all tube models anyway.

I'll probably get laughed at for this, but I like the Crate V32 better than the Peavey Classic 30.

My guitarist uses a Bassman reissue. I believe it's 4 10". It is incredible sounding and insanely loud. It can easily, easily bury the entire band if he cranks it. We keep it on about 3 for rehearsal. The only thing I personally don't like are the chickenhead knobs.
