Buying my first electric guitar... suggestions??

Hey TB,

While i'm a bassist through and through, i've recently been having fun teaching myself some stuff on my room mate's guitar. In persuit of becomming a more well rounded musician in general, i've decided to pick up my own guitar! I've narrowed my choices down to three:

-Squier VM Jagmaster

-Squier CV/VM Telecaster

-SX Tele

Has anyone had any experience with these? I will say my dream guitar is a Jazzmaster. My general musical stylings fall in the realms of Shoegaze, Dream pop, post rock and screamo (skramzy kind... not My Chemical Romance kind). Aesthetically i dig the Jagmaster, but i have heard nothing in regards to a review on one. So, any help regarding any of these would be greatly appriciated!!

I've got a squier custom tele, with a couple of p90s, and I've played my old geetard's MIJ Jaguar. Although I dug the Jag better in terms of tone, all those switches were confusing and I've seen them get hit at exactly the wrong moment cutting all sound from the guitar! Also, I preferred the way the tele plays, the scale length and neck suit me and my technique (or lack thereof) better. It's hardly a bad sounding guitar either, I've run it through one of those big purple Marshall Vintage Moderns and was really happy with it. Go play some guitars, it's the only way to be sure...

Sorry, but I'm curious: why get a Squier at all? Craigslist is simply chock-full of ads for USA Telecasters for very reasonable prices. And once you've had the Telly for a while, you can always upgrade the stock Fender pickups to DiMarzio single coils. I highly recommend the "Area T" or the "Hot Area T" bridge and "Area T" for neck. "Why those?" Completely noiseless and hotter output than Fender, not to mention a great tone.

Super good point.

I guess my most honest answer is that i'm looking more twards the Jazzmaster side of things. A Tele in general is a back-up. So, that being the case, the Squier Jagmaster is the only cheepy Jazzmaster clone out there... unless Fender has MiM/MiJ/CiJ Jag/Jazzmasters. Pretty much every guitarist that has inspired me to try out the ol' 6 string plays Jazzmasters... so yeah

Also, i am in NO ways a guitarist, so i'd rather not invest TOO heavily into what ammounts to a glorified 'experiment'.

In any case, my room mate just got a G&L Tribute Tele (natural w/ pearloid pickguard, looks and sounds AMAZING) and i'll totally pass allong the pickup reccomendation
